I have a 2000 1.8T Golf that I purchased new. I have had numerous problems with the car, many which seem common to VWs, e.g. window regulators, sensors, things falling off or peeling. But lately it’s even worse. The car unexpectedly begins to hesitate and goes into this “”limp mode”" where it will only go 35 or 40 mph on a flat road, if you’re lucky. The EPC light comes on the dash. This happens when I am driving on a high speed interstate. I have long since stopped taking my VW to the dealer- tired of their dishonesty and outrageous prices (they wouldn’t fix a burned out headlight without wanting to charge an $80 diagnostic fee). Since the EPC light goes out by the time I get to my mechanic and the car will not duplicate the problem for him, they cannot fix it. However, the problem has been happening more frequently lately, so I hope he’ll be able to do something.
This car has been so depressing. It’s still new, to me, so I can’t understand why the interior finish is peeling, why the overhead light assembly is completely broken, why the rear hatch relay died, etc. In my conversations with VW Customer Service, they always refer me to a dealer and never acknowledge the pattern of unreliability the company has established, nor do they offer to compensate me for the tremendous inconvenience the car has caused, not to mention the safety issue.
VW should concentrate on making a more reliable vehicle and improve their customer relations, rather than focusing on the luxury market- check out their $40,000 +++ SUV!
I plan on selling my VW (and losing lots of money) and working to spread the word about these cars.
P.S. Anyone ever tried writing to the Chairman of the Board in Wolfsburg? I think I found his address on the internet.
