what a crappy car, springs fall from seats, cups fall from holders replaced the battery once, rear brakes once.front brakes look like brand new.. go figure. lost two coils before recall. doors squeek, lights are charred, doors stick closed in cold weather. and last week i found that all four window gaskets are ripped. windows havent fallen down………yet.
OK, so the good news…the check engine light hasn’t come back on in the past week and a half. Not so hot…my husband and I would like to buy a new house, and financially it would be nice to only have one car payment – this means we would have to get rid of our lovely Jetta. I really am conserned about selling the stupid car to some innocent person. But today, I was like, “OK, so the cars been OK for the last couple weeks, lets try to sell it!” Yea, then I look up the value…$12,000 if its in excellent condition. Do they consider excellent condition to be 8 or more problems in the past two and a half years? Think not, so at good condition it’s valued at $11,200. I owe $14,500! I bought the stupid thing for over $25,000 new! I HATE THIS CAR! I think I’m being punished and it will be with me for the rest of my life!
Sorry, just had to vent my frustrations! Have a good day!
Bees wax…Really? That’s hilarious… There’s at least one quandry answered! Thanks. I read one of your responses to the misguided fellow that seems to think we are having problems with our VW’s because we don’t know how to take care of them…and our problems are random and inconsistent… That said, I appreciate your response to said fella and I have to say that your VW problems are pretty consistent with mine – almost identical to mine…and many others… (BEES WAX..heh heh..it’s comical, really.) Thanks, Meaghan.
I bought a 2000 GTI GLX in May, 2000. I was sucked in by the German driving experience for 10K less than a BMW. I really did like the car and miss driving it.
My car problems probably aren’t as bad as some — I had 5 or 6 window regulators go bad, 3 emission lights, headlight and tail light go out, and then last March, disaster struck. Another emissions/check engine light went off. I went down to ye olde Fairfax Virginia VW dealership. They informed me I had a bad coil pack and numerous emissions problems. More than $2,000 in repairs, this on a car <3 years old with 37K on the dial.
I called VWOA, and they would only give me about $1,000 of help. Next door to VW in Fairfax is a Honda dealer. I said, screw this, and walked over to Honda. They put me in a new 2002 Civic EX w/5 speed they hadn’t been able to sell. I got a nice deal on it. Honda agreed to deal with the VW and the financials of the repairs if I bought the Honda. I did so.
I paid Honda the 5 remaining payments on the VW, who then sent the check to VW (note: I paid my lease obligations in FULL to VW, paying them months of payments in ADVANCE). VW picked up the car a few months later (note: VW got the car back BEFORE my lease was up, thus getting the car with less miles and less wear).
I had a few months of car payment bills from VW, 7 or 8 phone calls from VW credit, several threatening letters. After a lot of phone calls, I thought all was well and I didn’t hear from them for 4 months.
This Monday past, I had a slim letter from VW in my mailbox. At the top of said letter, there was this gem – NOTICE OF REPOSSESSION.
Repossession, I thought. That’s odd. I didn’t think any more of that, though (note: I have excellent credit, and this didn’t raise a red flag, which it should have). Then I look down at the bottom. They said I owed them $2,600 because they sold the car for $11,900 and the residual was $14,500. What the f@#$?
I went back to Fairfax Honda the next day and showed the manager the letter. He completely flipped his wig. The REPOSSESSION aspect of the letter meant more to him than I.
“Have you checked your credit lately?” He asked me.
“No,” I said. I suddenly forgot about the $2,600.
He ran my credit. VW credit tagged me with an involuntary repossession, taking my credit score from a 740 to a 590.
The Honda manager got on the phone with VW and began reaming them out. He was trying to help me because I was a customer, but also because of that $2,600. He was going to have to pay it if he couldn’t get it waived.
Some dickhead at VW Credit started ‘negotiating’ with him. He said to pay up 2 grand and they would take the black mark off my report. The Honda manager said no way. There was no justification for deeming this an ‘involuntary repossession’ because they got the car back early and I made all remaining payments in advance. He also told them what they were doing to me was an open-ended lease (sticking me with the bill because the car didn’t sell for what they needed) and this is completely illegal.
Anyway, at the end of the day, he eventually got to the Director of Financing at VW, and he has agreed to waive the $2,600 and repair my credit immediately.
It all worked out in the end, but this is one shady company. They have permanently lost my business. I’d walk before I’d buy another VW. I am still contemplating a law suit for the hassle.
Aside from the fact that my 2001 VW Wolfsburg edition Jetta has had a never endiing stream of problems from electrical to fuel injection to turbo etc, etc, etc and has been in the shop seven times this year and they still can’t fix it – the dealer is even a bigger problem! The service people at Roger Jobs are arrogant and insulting, let alone incompetant!
VW corporate is just as bad, while they are syrupy sweet, they are totally impotent when working with the local dealer. Their attitude is “we can’t help you until your car is at the dealer”. Oh did I point out that WE HAVE ALREADY BEEN AT THE DEALER 7 F’N TIMES THIS YEAR.
We had a 1999 Passat 4-cylinder Turbo sedan. A few of the problems were: faulty tranny, excessive brake wear, lousy audio system, malfunctioning glovebox, bad battery. Worse than the lemony quality of the vehicle was VW’s disregard for us, the luckless consumer. Except for the tranny, which they replaced under warranty, everything else was “”Gee, tough luck!”" (even though we had an extended warranty). This included their so-called VW “”consumer advocates”" (LOL, bitterly). After being disappointed time and again with their apathetic, do-nothing approach, we are now happily driving Honda vehicles, and letting our friends, family and acquaintances know how lame the service is from VW of America.
Appreciate your site as an avenue for warning all who will listen that VW cares about selling cars, not crafting them or servicing them.
What a joke of a car! I’m turning in my lease next month, and today while driving, the window fell into the door and broke. Stupid me, thought I had escaped that recall. Should have known. This on top of the O2 sensor recall, child safety do-it-yourself recall kit (that I threw in the trunk – I’m not assuming that liability), the glove compartment door falling off, the power window knob falling off, the cup holder flying into the backseat when I pressed it one day ($60 to replace!!), the constant oil consumption despite regular maintenance, the faulty alarm system, the non working window washers, the engine coil recall, the rusting door frames, the constant burned out headlights and tail lights (I carry bulbs with me in the trunk now), the insipid customer service, AND the overpriced and shoddy dealer service. All for a three year old car. More like my ugly german stepchild at this point.
i got a used VW gulf and have had it for a year. I only drive it around the corner to school and to get groceries. I had the clutch replaced (900$) and ever since then it has not driven the same. So i took it to the dealer and they found that 2nd gear grinds–in order to fix this they must break 5th gear this would cost me 1,800$– i did purchase a power train warranty which vw “”feels”" that my car should not be covered by because it is due to my wear and tear. F*** THAT
i want it gone as soon as possible. Give me a vespa any day. This is my 4th one and i have only had problems–not to mention i treat them like my kids.
I keep seeing the phrase all too familiar problems.
such ass the paint scratching, fading, misc sunroof pieces falling, gauges messing up, all the common things.
below make a simple list of the problems with your car along with the year model engine transmission and VIN number and I’ll check back and read the VIN numbers to find a common factor such as production dates or production locations. If we come up with a common problem to hold to the Volkswagen company odds of a recall or something along those lines are much greater. I don’t hate Volkwagens if anything I want the duds of the company fixed so that maybe future cars will maintain the more popular belief that Vw’s are good reliable automobiles. Thanks
