99 Turbo Passat Oil light…and other problems
My brother just bought a 99 passat turbo and has a few problems.
The oil light came on just after he bought it(from a private owner).
The VW dealer said it could be a number of things but that they would start with an “”oil pressure switch”" replacement. While they had it at their shop they said the tie rods were loose (the passenger side was dangerously worn) and he had those replace as well. ($630.00)
They said the oil pressure switch may not fix the problem but that it would cost $140.
Well. They said it was done. I took him to the dealer to pick it up and when a mechanic pulled the car around, he got out and said, “”did you know your oil light was on?”" sheesh.
So they said the next step was to drop the oil pan and “”clean out the crud”" from the oil screen. Then, if that doesn’t work, they might have to replace the oil pump. Wow.
He took the car back home to research this situation before he takes it back in. So, I have been on the internet trying to find info that would help us learn more about the passat’s issues.
Also, he noticed fumes smell in the cab… is this a characteristic of this car?
I really hope someone can help. If these are things that we could fix on our own, it would be nice. Has anyone cleaned the oil screen in the oil pan?
Thanks for your time.

99 Turbo Passat Oil light…and other problems – Check the oil pressure? That’s too easy
That was number one on the list of many “”possible”" fixes by the dealer. They did an oil pressure check and it came up positive… But they replaced the oil switch anyway…. Nothing fixed. They said it could be the clogged oil screen in the pan but couldn’t guarantee it.
If that wasn’t it, they would replace the oil pump… But couldn’t guarantee it.
This dealer is absolutely slimy. About the tie rods… They said they needed replaced. I looked up and found that this particular passat had a recall on tie rods!! the VW factory said, “”hmmmm those were replaced under warranty in 2000″”!!!!!! third set of tie rods and $630 later on a 99 passat with 65,000 miles!!
this would be a big help…i read a few posts on this subject but haven’t read if anyone has cleaned the oil pan screen themselves.
thanks for any help

99 Turbo Passat Oil light…and other problems – ok first off….that wasn’t the tech that brought the car around to you, it was the car wash boy (who has no knowledge of what was done to your car) and second off, your dealer sucks….it is common practice to just replace the pump when in there for “screen cleaning” which never fixes it anyways….and don’t even try to replace the pump yourself unless you are equiped with a lift and air tools….and yes the car may qualify for the campaign, but that doesn’t mean that it was done…and you need to read the campaign and get back to me…cause a lot of them will say “replace only if wear is present” and the “factory” will have no knowledge of that, so i have my doubts on that one as to who you really spoke with, if anyone at all.

99 Turbo Passat Oil light…and other problems – DID YOUR BROTHER CHECK THE MAINTENANCE RECORDS ON THE CAR BEFORE HE BOUGHT IT? IF THE OIL CHANGE HISTORY CANNOT BE DOCUMENTED TO HAVE OCCURRED EVERY 5K MILES THE OIL PUMP SCREEN IS THE MOST LIKELY SUSPECT. STOP DRIVING THE CAR UNTIL THE OIL PAN IS REMOVED AND THE SCREEN IS CHECKED. A WARNING SIGN OF LACK OF OIL CHANGES IS SLUDGE BUILD UP ON THE OIL FILLER CAP. TAKE IT OFF AND LOOK AT THE UNDERSIDE. IF THERE IS ALOT OF SLUDGE LIKE BUILD UP THAT’S A GOOD INDICATION OF LACK OF PROPER OIL CHANGES. SMELL IT. DOES IT SMELL BURNT? ANOTHER SIGN. THE FUMES IN THE CAR ARE A POSSIBLE SIGN OF THE TURBO FAILING. TURBOS REALLY REALLY REALLY NEED TO HAVE OIL CHANGES AT NO MORE THAN 5K MILES.

99 Turbo Passat Oil light…and other problems – Hey quick advice on expierence oil pump usually gets plugged up due too lack of maintanance, also you light is coming on because the is no pressure. after the pump is replaced an engine flush is required. the chatter is probably the chain the keeps the cams timed smack against somthing since the cam adjuster is operated through oil pressure.

99 Turbo Passat Oil light…and other problems – Same “Oil Light” Problem with my 99 Passat. My mechanic disconnected the sensor only to find the light still was going off. It gets worse. 3 weeks ago I am dirving and start to slowly loose power 60…50..40..coast to a stop, nothing. I had it towed to the closest VW dealer, His expert opinion after a week in the shop is that I blew the engine because I drove with the Oil light on. Of course he did not know that I knew that the sensor did not work. He quoted me $6500 for a new engine. Immediately had it towed to my mechanic after being forced to pay $250 for the EXPERT diagnosis of the dealer before they would release my car. My mechnaic found that the tensioner on the timing belt had moved and my cams were out of synce, $ 650 later I am driving around. Prior to that I took my car in for an alignment only to find both tie rods bent, my mechnic only charged me $130. IF the Tie Rods were recalled you should have gotten them replace for free I am checking into that you should too, I’ve been rembursed many times in the past for Recall repairs that I had done without knowledge of the recall. In addition there is some sort of electrical Module that I am going to get replaced to hopefully rectify the Oil light situation. There is much more to this story and it is not finished yet.
