Glove box
The hinge on my wife’s 2000 jetta’s glove box has broken twice within the last year. I talked with two people at work who have/had jettas and they were surprised that the original one lasted so long. I’m used to the windows falling off their tracks but she stopped using the glove box after it broke the first time and it still broke again.
The air bag light has come on three times, I’ve replaced multiple sensors but the real kicker was when the flapper cap in the neck of the fuel tank fell into the tank preventing any gas from being pumped. I also thought that the rear brakes wore out prematurely. I’m currently involved with the dealer over the amount of oil the engine guzzels. By the way the car has under 30k on it. I should have listened to my wife and bought a Toyota.

Glove box – My car’s armrest has the same disease as your glove box (poor manufacturing). Shame you must keep returning for so many repairs to what most consider a new car – shame no one is suprised.
My rear brakes wore prematurely as did two coworkers (also VW owners). Two of us got VW of America to pay for them. Seems VW previously had many compaints of squeaky brake noise. So to quiet the brakes (and the complaints) VW specified brake pads that wear quicker but don’t squeak. My coworker was told this by a certified VW dealership service rep..and hence he and I requested VW of America pay for them to be replaced (mine wore out at about 27,000 miles – and I’m not a ‘heavy braker’.
Oil guzzling is an ongoing issue with VWs…shouldn’t be, but is…’Car Talk’ – the syndicated radio program broadcast on many NPR stations addressed the issue – unfortunately their suggestion was that it was a loosing battle with VW and VW will never admit it is a problem with many of their cars (I alone had three friends with oil-guzzling VW engines)
My only suggestion is that from experience…Keep track of everything…keep copies of all repairs (from all VW dealerships) and insist that they be fixed whilst under warranty…VW of Amer. doesn’t seem to support customers past the warranty! And keep track of number of repairs for the same problems…lemon laws do work. Hope this helps a little.

Glove box – I suppose I should have included the fact that the rear brake pads being replaced was more than a “goodwill gesture”…
The corporate CSR who arranged for the repair agreed to pay for it not only because the brakes shouldn’t have worn so quickly, but also to ‘make up for’ the time and expenses I incurred while the VW dealership attempted to determine why the engine in my Jetta was repeatedly stalling. I think by the time VW Corporate offered to pay for repair of my brakes, I had taken my car in 6 or seven times (for that same stalling problem).
While I hate to acknowlege unthoughtful remarks…I do ‘have a life’ and I’d prefer not to spend it at a car dealership waiting for repairs…I’ve learned that lesson and will do more research on the realiability of a vehicle next time. I just simply tried to help another with my experience in hopes they needn’t spend as much time and expense as I

Glove box – AND…the whole “KIA” Thing… You’ve confused “MISA” with my posting…Please see Misa’s posting about affording the cost of the VW and the KIA remark…

Glove box – i too had the glove box door issue. i have a 99 new body style jetta. it broke 3 times in a year. unfortunately, the 1st was after my warranty was up, so i paid $250 to get it fixed-vw kept replacing it from then on. cup holders- i cant even tell you how many times ive replaced it, not to mention- who puts a cup holder over an electronic device? i stopped short one day, my iced tea spilled because the cupholder sucks, and fried my radio. i loved my old 88 fox. maybe i should get an older vw next.

Glove box – Those items are really minor! Be happy you aren’t having major problems.

Glove box – ok, i’m not knocking anybody, but before you guys purchased your vehicles did you see that most of the things inside are made of plastic??? i’ve seen many many many glove box doors, armrest latches, mirror knobs, basically anything made of that plastic material and anything that you use frequently will break. it’s plastic for christs’ sake. and as for the brakes please refer to my brake job post. air bag lights gas flaps, yes i’ve seen it all. i’m not saying it’s normal but what i am saying is you’re not the only one. and a brake job at 30k is DEFINITELY normal, for vw that is. yeah maybe you should’ve bought a toyota. i drive one with 160k miles on it and i haven’t replaced a thing that wasn’t a maintenance item.

Glove box – What about the size of the glove box. You can barely get the car manual in it. With the compartment closed it looks huge then you open it and it is microscopic.
