singing the oil consumption blues??
yes, vw’s do consume oil. in fact, i dont know of a car that doesn’t. but yes vw’s have had a problem with consuming too much oil. what is considered “too much”? over 1 quart every 1k miles. now i can’t break it down technically as to why they do, i just know that they do. “so what do i do about it”? you might be asking… take it to a dealership (would you like some cheese with your whine?). they will perform an oil change or top off the oil if need be record the mileage and oil level. you will then have to check the oil every thousand miles. if the oil is low you should then bring the car in so the dealer can make a note of it. they will then top off the oil and record the mileage and oil level. you should repeat this process about three times. it takes 3 trips or 3k miles to get an accurate reading of how much oil your vw is consuming. if you find yourself going back five and six times with minor top off amounts then you needn’t worry. it’s when you have to continually put quarts of oil in that you’ll have a problem. the repair is to replace the piston rings and deglaze the cylinders. the repair takes about a full day of work so be prepared to set up alternate transportation. this is not a problem that can’t be fixed.

singing the oil consumption blues?? – …but it shouldn’t be a problem. Had the ring job after months of begging and proving to doubting mechanics. It’s not whining, it’s expecting a decent product for my money.

singing the oil consumption blues?? – sorry, i wasn’t suggesting you (or anyone for that matter) were whining . what i was trying to do was make a joke about how often people complain about taking their cars in to the dealership. and no, it shouldn’t be a problem but the fact is, that it is.
as far as the money you spent, the unfortunate fact in the car business is spend a little more, get a better product. but that’s how car manufacturers operate. the ideal is to produce a car for as little money as possible that a lot of people will want to buy. their sole purpose is to make money. YOUR money. your hard earned, over-spent money. again, i’m not defending their practises. what i’m trying to do is to open peoples eyes as to the “”normal”" vw characteristics. i truly feel for anyone who feels like they have been burned by vw. but a lot more people need to do a little more reading. i was always amazed at how many people never even took the time before buying their car to research how much and how often they had to maintain their car. i had people all the time complaining about how much the service was and if they had known then they would never have bought a vw.
did you know that in europe it is illegal to mark up the price of cars? but that’s the norm here in the states. it’s human nature to find the easiest way to do things. and when we are spoon-fed information, whether it is correct or not, we tend to just follow suit and believe what we are told. that’s why people who have never owned cars before can sometimes have the impression that the dealership is the last place to go when you need service. yes a lot of dealerships do suck in terms of the service they give, but the ones who do care suffer the bad rep of all the other bad apples.
another thng to realize is the dealership did not manufacture the car. the fact that they consume oil or that they require brake replacement at what some would call unacceptable mileages is something that the manufacturer has to address if they so choose. and that’s most likely not going to happen. why should they change the way they produce their cars? i think they’re very happy about the fact that when you change your brakes you’re more likely to use the parts that they manufacture anyways. so either way they still make their money. i hear what you’re saying but i think it’s a downhill battle. word to the wise… buy a japanese car!! lol

singing the oil consumption blues?? – Baught my 2001 Beetle used with 26091 miles. @ 28500 miles (after warrenty by less then 500 miles). The car began ticking. I filled it with oil. My car is in the shop. Needs new engine ($5,000). The service guy mentioned that other compaints about oil consumption (1 quart every 400 miles). Looked for class action law siut but looks like I’m out of the cash. Very dissatisfied. Anybody hears of law suit please post. I am interested in compensation for my financial loss. This was my 1st VW and my last with many warnings against buying such a lemon.

singing the oil consumption blues?? – 2003 passat tdi 130 in the uk.
Had all problems and more, received same answer from VW
“”oil consumption normal”"
now at 12 months old engine gone bang
Con Rod come out of side of engine caused front wheels to stop dead at 60mph.
resulting in car leaving road.
unable to depress clutch as engine mount broken by the con rod jamed clutch.
Vw investigating but still insist engine was normal.
We must keep on at vw to address this major engine defect of burning oil, common in the 60’s not now.
