thinking of buying 2000 passat wagon V6 GLX

I have read many good reviews and seen places like this with many bad reviews. I Would appreciate any constructive insight and or experiences before i buy. The car has 98,000km on it – GLX version, leather, v6. Test drove it yesterday and it drove well and was comfortable. The dealer is asking $20K canadian. Any thoughts from people who have similar models?
During the test drive we almost ran out of gas and the car started sputtering – it continued to do this after putting $10 in gas in. Was told this was becasue the computer needs to be reset if gas gets too low becasue it was continuing to give a very lean gas-air mix in order to delay the car from running out of gas – is this true or bollocks? any one else had this happen?
many thanks for comments

thinking of buying 2000 passat wagon V6 GLX – That’s bollocks.

Did it run like that the entire time after filling up? or did it quiet down after a few minutes?

If it kept running poorly all the way back from the gas station, I would not buy that particular car.

    bollocks

v : make a mess of, destroy or ruin [syn: botch, fumble, botch up, muff, blow, flub, screw up, ball up, blunder, spoil, muck up, bungle, fluff, bollix, bollix up, bollocks up, bobble, mishandle, louse up, foul up, mess up]

    Pretty snarky, eh?

thinking of buying 2000 passat wagon V6 GLX – Thanks for input – anyone else had this particular problem?

When we put some gas in and drove back to dealership, it continued to sputter and the “”check emissions”" light came on – is this related to the lean fuel mixture that the computer sets when running out of gas?

thinking of buying 2000 passat wagon V6 GLX – A CEL has nothing to do with running out of gas. Something is wrong with the car.

It’s quite possible the car is running lean. It may also be running rich. Only a diagnostic tool can tell you what the CEL is warning you about, but that alone should tell you to either not buy the car, or haggle for a lower price once they tell you what that CEL meant. If you can get them to give you the VAG DTC number reported by the ECU, that’ll help. Just ask them what the codes were for the CEL, then you can check them yourself here

thinking of buying 2000 passat wagon V6 GLX – Your dealer is lying to you. If I were to guess I would say it could be a faulty MAF, ignition coil or something else making the cylinders misfire. The dealer couldn’t even get it together for the test drive, how do you think they will treat you in a month when you get a repair bill in the thousands? You didn’t say what year it was but I am guessing it is out of warranty. If you are going to buy used, get one that will be inexpensive to fix when things go wrong, and that is not VW.

thinking of buying 2000 passat wagon V6 GLX – Used cars come with their own warranty.

Also, I’m not sure it’s the MAF. the V6 engine MAFs are not known to fail prematurely (only the 1.8T engine’s MAF can claim this dishonor).

    Still, it’s possible.

Either way, the salesman is lying. I suggest going to a different VW dealership if you are really interested in a 2000 Passat Wagon V6. They’re solid vehicles (the Passats in general are a solid line, being made with the Audi B-series platform instead of the VW MkIV platform).

thinking of buying 2000 passat wagon V6 GLX – I heard the new passats are not what they are cracked up to be. My friends bought a 1998 Passat (German model) and they have had endless problems right donw to the dash lights going out, which screws up the alarm system so you cant lock the doors. Cost for fixing over $1000 Canadian.

Personaly I alost regret getting my 1993 Passat but the diesel fuel economy is terrific.

thinking of buying 2000 passat wagon V6 GLX – Almost all VWs from the late 90s suffered electronics problems… it was during the period when VW was switching to drive-by-wire, multi-sensor platforms.

The new Passats looks quite nice, and I have yet to hear a horror story about the W8 and V6 engines (I’m sure there are, I just haven’t heard any, so I suppose they’re rare)… but at this point, buying a Passat isn’t worth it to me. If you’re going to spend the cash, might as well go for a Phaeton. ;)

Okay, big price gap, Passats have their purpose… heh.

thinking of buying 2000 passat wagon V6 GLX – Okay, have asked a couple of people who said that the computer DOES need to be reset if you let the gas run down to fumes – which is what the dealer said after it continued to sputter after putting $10 in it.
I’m confused if he was telling the truth or not. Anybody confirm if this has happened to them, or is the dealer lying?

thinking of buying 2000 passat wagon V6 GLX – The closest I can think of, without knowing the DTC, is that the EVAP control detected a vacuum leak in the gas tank, which can happen if the gas cap is loose or missing.

This would cause a check engine light to go on in the car until you seal the tank.

It won’t make you run crappy.

Having it run crappy… on a truly low gas tank, you’ll be sucking up the dregs, this can cause improper firing of the cylinders and may the car run crappy, perhaps even block the fuel injectors. This should have fixed itself soon after refilling and driving the car around. If it continued to run like crap long after the refueling (say it’s still crappy after 5 minutes at idle), then something from the dregs of the gas tank may have come up and blocked a fuel injector.

This will happen to any fuel-injected car.

But none of this means you have to get the VAG-tool to “”reset”" something, particularly if no engine light ever showed on the instrumet cluster. That would be BOLLOCKS.

thinking of buying 2000 passat wagon V6 GLX – My 2000 Passat 6cyl wagon ran out of gas today (my wife). A message came on the board and said something about emission problems and the light with the engine symbol came on and stayed on. i am fairly certain the car was completely out of gas as it would start but would not drive. after adding about .75 gallons of gas, it took about 3 or 4 cranks of the engine to get it to start. it ran very rough for about two or three minutes then it was fine. it drove home (4 mi) just fine, plenty of power, etc. The engine symbol light is still on however. My wife and i both thouroughly enjoy this car. it was a great buy. Some problems with cheap interior plastic molding and ashtray. Any responses on what i need to do about the engine symbol light?
