Emissions Workshop?
I’ve owned my 2000 Passat since December and about a month after I bought it, the check engine light came on and the display read Emissions Workshop! I called my local dealer and they said that it could be anything from a gas cap not being screwed on tight enough to a vacuum hose. I replaced my gas cap and found a small hole in the vacuum line that runs off of the front/top of the engine, repaired it, reset the computer and a few days later it came on again. I have not noticed any performance or running problems. I had it in for safety and emissions and they said that they reset the computer and the car passed emissions just fine. And then a couple of days later, the light came back on. Any suggestions, short of dropping the cash at a VW dealer?

Emissions Workshop? – Call your dealer and ask what code was logged in the engine computer when they reset/removed it. They should have noted it down on your maintenance record. If they did not, see if they will scan your engine computer free of charge; dealerships are authorized to charge for this service, but considering they cleared it and did not note down the code, nor did they apparently fix it, they may do this as a freebie.
Once you have the code, post on this forum what the number is and we can take it from there.
A CEL (check engine light) can be any number of things. The engine computer logs the DTCs (diagnostic trouble codes) that trigger the CEL, and this guides the mechanic towards the trouble.
Get the DTC.

Emissions Workshop? – I have the exact same problem!!! I bought my 2000 Passat this June and the light came on in August. Of course, it took 2-3 weeks to get an appointment and they said it was a vacuum line, charged me $100. I later heard that the vacuum lines were recalled so this should have been done for free. Then later that day, it went on again, took me another 2 weeks to get an appointment. That was yesterday. VW said it was another vacuum hose, replaced it free of charge and sent me on my way. Today, the light came on again. So I started doing some research and have found out that this happens to alot of people. I, too, am looking for some advice. Please help!!!!

Emissions Workshop? – Morgan, email me your VIN and I will run it for open recalls. Also get the DTC’s and we can tell you what the codes are for. Good luck. If the vehicle is a V6 there was a recall on the secondary air vacuum lines. It was a “WE” recall, for 1998 – 2001 Passat’s with the 2.8L V6 engine. They replace the vacuum line for the secondary air injection system combination valves (“kombi valves”) Hope this helps.
