Engine Light

I just got my car a week from today and it has been in the shop twice cause of the engine light. The first time, they had to change the ground wire under the battery. The second time it came on (4 days later) it is being left over night. There is some sort of an un-usual problem with the coil for cylinder 1 or something. I have no idea what the hell that is supposed to mean. All I know is that they have to change another part. This is so shit. It is a new car!

Engine Light – Hi Sonia, can you please tell us the year, model, trim, and engine (e.g. 2005 Jetta GLI 1.8T) of your car?

Also, if you can ask the dealership for the DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) that caused the check engine light. Just ask for the DTCs; there may be just the one, or a bunch of them, and they are each 5 digits long. They should provide this to you. If they ask, tell them you are doing independent research. Whatever the case, it’s your care, you are entitled to the DTCs.

Engine Light – My car is the 2004 GLS Golf 2.0L. I haven’t got the DTS yet, but the problem had to do with the engine light diagnosed found that the ignition coil was malfunctioning in re to air pump, so they replaced the coil.

    Engine Light – Sonia,

I just bought a brand new 04 Jetta TDI and it has been in the shop once a week for the past 4 weeks – the check engine light keeps coming on and it is always something different. What sucks for me (other than the obvious) is that it is over a 2 hour trek for me to go pick it up!
