Workshop Emission Light and rough idle

I have 2000 Passat that has had the Workshop light notice appear on occasion. At present, the warning is off, but the engine idles rough. By this I mean is that the egines rpm fluctuates from 900 rpm down to 500 rpm or so. I know there has been a warranty extension on the mass airflow senor (7 year, 70k miles). Could this be the problem.

I have to take the vehicle into a dealer without having some reasonable diganosis prior to them messing with it with the vehicle and having them say it is nothing.

Workshop Emission Light and rough idle – Rough idle and CEL would definitely point to a MAF… if it’s a 1.8T. As far as I know, the warranty is valid only for 1.8T engines.

Workshop Emission Light and rough idle – My advice to you is not to use the dealer. I’ve had nothing but bad experiences with both the dealerships I’ve used in my area. Not to mention that the car itself is a lemon. In the past I’ve always used an indepedent with a good reputation. Their hourly rates are usually more reasonable than dealerships and they tend to be more thorough. Paul’s diagnosis seems correct though, since your car is having the same problems my 01 1.8T before they replaced the coils and MAF sensor.

Workshop Emission Light and rough idle – Hello,
Just some helpful suggestions pertaining to your 2000 passat.
Idle quality is controlled by the throttle body, consists of actuators and imputs.
The throttle plate over time becomes gummed up with carbon, in reality this effects the amount of airflow to the engine which controls idle quality.
Excessive amounts of carbon affects idle quality: solution clean the throttle body with cleaner and then the computer must be reset: it’s called basic settings for the throttle body. If this is your culprit then your idle will be fixed, If it will not take the basic settings then the throttle body is defective.
A quick test of the mass is a wiggle test, if idle changes or stalls could be wiring.
Also if you disconnect mass, it will go into a backup mode meaning use the throttle body as a reference.(if it clears up while being disconnected, it’s a indication of a faulty mass, however this is not a 100% diagnosis also will turn the check engine light on)
I hope this helps, if your curious about my credidentals I”"m a VW technican lol see mechanics care hope this helps.. I admit our prouct has some unique features but what company doesn’t have their problems..

Workshop Emission Light and rough idle – Hello,

Has your problem been fixed ?
If so, kindly let me know the details as my vehicle (2000 Passat, almost 70K mileage) seems to be doing exactly the same.
