95 Golf ventilation controls

Anyone have advice on how I might go about diagnosing and fixing a problem with my vent controls? My ventilation fan has been intermittently unresponsive to the vent dial recently, and the other day I found the dial was hot to the touch. Shortly after I found out the fan cuts out on the highest setting (#4).

    95 Golf ventilation controls – Have the ECU checked for silent codes in the central convenience module. A dealership can do this, but they charge $90/diagnostic.

    A person with a VAG-COM can do this, and he/she will probably charge you a beer.
