Oil guzzling 2001 Golf

I just bought this 2001 Golf GL 2.0(re-certified), with 78,800 kms on it. I researched it before and read about potential oil guzzling problems on some. This may be due due to improper assembly of the piston rings, or whatever. I am not worried about why it uses oil, I just want the f#$@ing thing fixed. It used 1 litre/quart of oil just over 1000 kms (600 miles) of driving. The VW dealership said you have to come in and do an oil consumption log. They say that 2000kms or over for a litre for every litre of oil is acceptable. They said it has to be logged over 3 top ups!!! What a bunch of bull@#$t. My brother has a 1992 Acura Legend, it has 338,000 kms on it. He tops it up a little after driving every 10,000 kms!!! That is just one example. Not happy. Will keep updated.

$34/liter for ATF!

For my first oil change, I mistakenly drained the automatic transmission fluid from my Tiptronic transmission (2004 Jetta TDI). Yes, I know that was stupid, but the oil pan was hidden under a plastic cover and the transmission was exposed with a nice, big drain plug availible for some poor sucker like me. I knew as soon as the red fluid came out that I had opened up the wrong compartment, but didn’t think much about it since automatic transmission fluid isn’t that expensive…right? Wrong! The dealer said the fluid costs $34/liter and it would take 5 or 6 liters. I found the fluid on line for half that amount and with shiping it was under $20, which is still outragious. Figuring out how to know when the transmission was full was also an adventure. I ordered 4 liters and it only took a little under 3 liters. BTW, I understand this is suppose to be lifetime fluid. Does anyone believe that? :)

Cracked Oil Pan 2002 GTI VR6

So I took my 2002 GTI VR6 in to DAR Cars College Park VW dealer in Maryland for an oil change. Shortly after I received a call from my friendly service advisor informing me that my oil pan was cracked & leaking fluid. I was also told that because it was called by an external force, it would not be covered under my Bumper-Bumper certified used warranty.

I am still running stock suspension & drive on pretty normal streets. I called VWoA & received a polite brush-off from customer service. I asked the rep if I should expect to take my car in every week to see if my oil pan is has cracked again, but she wouldn’t dignify that question with a responce.

Is it not reasonable to expect things like that not to break under normal driving conditions? I don’t recall hitting ANYTHING that should have caused damage underneath my car.

I filed a complain with the BBB & am waiting to hear back. I’m not too optimistic. I saw a post on VWVORTEX stating this was pretty common & it spoke of a class action suit being filed. I guess there are many owners who had the same thing happen except they wound up losing all their oil & blowing their engines.

VW 2003 Beetle Paint

I was wondering if anyone has had a paint problem. I have gouges on both sides of front bumper, that paint came off, and can see others that still has paint on it. VW rep at the facility I bought it said not their problem. The gouges are in same spot on both sides.

1999 tdi check engine light again and again and…..

when the check engine light first came on, I went to an authorized VW dealer. they replaced the mas air flow sensor. the light came back on the next day. three weeks later, when the car did not have enough power to get out of it’s own way, the same dealer, replaced the fuel filter, the air filter, changed the synthetic oil and cleaned out the EGR valve and intake manifold ($$$$$). the next day the check engine light came on. now the same dealer wants to replace the EGR valve, various solenoids and the hoses that attach all this stuff. $$$$$$$$. I paid extra for a diesel for the economy and longevity. now after paying off the car loan and doilg all the regularly scheduled maintenance at an authorized vw dealer, I’m buying the car again in maintenance costs. I admit the EGR cleaning realy made the car run well, but after only 70,000 miles of an otherwise babied life, I would expect better economy out of a diesel with respect to maintenance. These TDI’s are lemons. they are a maintenance night mare. vw really dosent seem to have a handle on making a car that is reasonable to maintain. it seems like I’m making. I’m NOT ever buying another VW.

98 TDI Beetle woes

Just a note to address issues on my 98 TDI Beetle. I have had the problem with a clogged intake manifold that cost 1,000 to fix. I was told by the service manager at the dealer that this is a common problem with the TDI cars. I feel that it is an inherent desighn flaw and should be covered byVW. I also just got the price fpr parts on a new clutch. Evidently the clutch system is unlike a typical clutch pressure plate system and is of course about 7 times as expensive as a clutch kit for a gas 2.0 or almost any regular car. This engine puts out less HP or torque than a 5 liter mustang but thr clutch costs 5 times as much. The timing belt replacement cost and interval should turn off anyone that is foolish enough to buy one of these cars because of mileage. The fuel savings when offset by the cost of maintaining this car and the little annoying glitches negate thecute novelty and stinky hands at fill up time. I am a mechanic, life long VW nut, diesel nut and my next car is a HONDA!

‘01 GTI brake lights

I have a 2001 GTI 1.8T that I have had my fair share of problems with. For the past year or so everything had been great. I’ve got 50k on it now. So here’s the problem. I got home last night and the brake lights (all three) will not go off. Could this be the sensor at the brake pedal? Also wondering if this is something the dealer should fix? I called SONNEN MOTOR CARS today and they said they were to busy to deal with it. Word of advice, do not buy a car at Sonnen in San Rafael, California!! Any help would be great!
Thanks,
Tim

Check Engne Light

I bought my 2004 Jetta TDI and exactly one week later the check eng. light comes on. I had RS Assist. tow it to nearest dealership. Faulty glow plus were he diagnosis. One week after that the light is on again. the vacuum hose is off. This past Sunday the light is at it again.. What the heck is the deal? the service Mgr I am dealing with is abrupt and becomes downright ugly when I mentioned a loaner car. I am a SUBSTANTIAL distance from any dealership and this every other week thing is crap - anyone have this kind of problem?
