94 passat vr6 question for paul

Hello there, my beloved passat has fallen ill once again.

I noticed the problem when i was getting pulled over, actually. there was a little bit of steam curling out from the engine compartment. other then this first visual sign, the car seemed to be running smoothly. The coolant level has been dropping rapidly lately, and due to the steam + the coolant loss i almost immediatley assumed my head gasket was going. However now, 3 weeks later, the car will turn over, then immediatley putter out. (it only does this sometimes, other times it will fire right up and idle nicely) the engine is skipping in low gear, and i have been seeing little collections of coolant in crevices underneath the block. O i am now thinking that i might just have ANOTHER coolant leak, and my valves might be the culprit. also some oil seems to be leaking out of the left side(looking at the vehicle) of the engine. any insight as to what might be the problem? id get it looked at by my mechanic, but taking the whole engine apart is going to run about 400 dollars, so id like to see if i cant avoid that diagnosis first. thanks for any help you can provide.

94 passat vr6 question for paul – p.s. no white/milky stuff on the dipstick. when the car starts to putter out i can keep it in neutral and give it some gas, once i start rolling the car runs ok. the check engine light usually stays on for about 3 minutes, then shuts off.

94 passat vr6 question for paul – as for the oil, my ‘92 had the same problem, check the hydrolic steering lines, you could have a leek. As for the coolant, it could again be a line, when was the last time you had them changed or inspected?

94 passat vr6 question for paul – Agreed. Check your fluid lines first. If you can’t find a problem then you may be forced to go to the mechanic for a diagnosis.

94 passat vr6 question for paul – yes, i have had the coolant lines seriveced several times by a private mechanic, not a dealer, once when when the heater core blew, and again when coolant still seemed to be “dissapearing”. its the car stalling all the time that i am most worried about. sometimes when the rpms get low enough it just turns the engine off. im just trying to figure out if its such a serious problem that my car is going just die and not start again.
