i need help please!
hi,
i have a 2000 vw beetle (turbo) and ever since my dad (a mechanic for the last 30 years or so) replaced the timing belt the radio has been on safe mode and the engine light has been on-both things neither of us can figure out why. everything has been plugged back in, and i tried using the code in my manuel for the radio, but no luck. since i got the car used, i figured that maybe it was a manuel from another car, but the vin# matches the one on my car-i have tried using the code 3 times exactly how it says to in the manuel, but it doesn’t work. also, my airbag light is on for some reason… any help would be greatly appreciated-thanks!

i need help please! – Post the instructions in your manual so I can see what you’re doing.
As for the airbag light… I’m not sure how that got triggered… possibly because the battery was disconnected for a prolonged period. Some 2001 and older MY New Beetles suffered an erroneous air bag light problem, which could only be fixed by replacing the airbag controller with a new one, usually meaning an entirely new airbag set.
If the CEL is on, then that might tell you something — do you have a way of reading the codes off the ECU?

i need help please! – The radio code can only be gotten by a dealership so you have to go there.
As for your Airbag/Check engine lights they are most likely on for the same reason your radio is in safe mode; you disconnected the battery. Your ecu is registering multiple low power faults for different systems (triggered as the power drained from the systems). This can be turned off with the proper equipment, most any svc facility/garage/autozone can clear these trouble codes for you.
Get them cleared, if the light comes back on after some driving, then take it to someone to diagnose, it may have another issue related to the repair.

i need help please! – the manual says to turn on the car, and the radio will read “1000″ then use the first four radio preset buttons to type in the code found on the radio card, then press and hold the right seek button until it beeps. that’s exactly what i did. i finally got ahold of a vw dealership (the actual company gave me no help) and he said that the code# i have is the one that matches in his computer and should work, but the previous owner may have replaced the radio and not written down the code anywhere, but if the serial# matches the one i already had, then i would have to replace my radio! how is that necessary? how is it possible that they have no back-up plan if the codes don’t work?! how could my radio possibly be junk now just because the battery was unplugged? ulgh, sorry about the rant… it’s just ridiculous. about the other two things- the airbag light has been on since before my dad replaced the first belt, and the check engine light came on after that, but the battery didn’t need to be unplugged at that time… i have to take a four-hour road trip this friday, do you think i’ll be able to make it, or do you think the check engine light being on should deter me from doing so? on a side note, someone told me that if you hook up a 9v battery to your car when unplugging/replacing the battery, it’ll give the car just enough juice that it won’t reset any of the codes. anyone heard of this before? think it would really work? anyways, i really appreciate you guys getting back to me, the help is much appreciated!

i need help please! – If the check engine light came on some time after you drove around there may be an issue that needs to be addressed. I’d take it to someone to have it looked at, worse comes to worse you pay someone a little bit to assure you there is nothing wrong.
As for your radio code, have the dealership look it up using the VW HOST system and verify the actual code. They will need the serial # stamped into the radio (usually 14 digits) and your VIN #.
