00 Jetta VR6 MAF

Okay i just checked my CEL and the code was P0420. i have looked at some of the past postings and some people mention the cat converter may not need to be replaced. is there a way i can check the MAD or 02 sensors or do i have to bring it to a dealer that will of course tell me that cat is bad

    00 Jetta VR6 MAF – 16804, P0420, Catalyst System,Bank1 Efficiency Below Threshold

Usually means the MAF is dead or needs to be cleaned. You can try cleaning it. Use 91% or higher Isopropyl alcohol (Rite-Aid or similar store has it for a buck), fill a ziploc bag about 1/3, dump the MAF and the housing it’s stuck inside into the bag and gently rock the bag, allowing the alchol to cover and wash through the mesh and sensor. Leave MAF out to dry, put back in car.
