Warranty extension on O2 sensors

Does anyone know where I can get more info on the Warranty Extension for the O2 Sensors or coilpack? I was told I need to replace the 02 sensors. There is a terrible smell when I turn on Air conditioning. Is that related to the coilpack?
Thanks for the help. CB

Warranty extension on O2 sensors – A terrible smell when you turn on air conditioning means you have mold/fungus in the system growing from pieces of dead skin and other debris coming from the occupants of a vehicle. When using the A/C, always make sure that after turning it off you should run the fan for a bit to dry the ducts (this is for any car).

This tends to be a larger problem in humid areas that promote fungal growth.

The solution is to spray disinfectant through the ducts and to replace the filter.

Who told you to replace your O2 sensors?

Coilpack recall is only on 2001-2002 1.8T engines, and has nothing to do with the fungal growth in your A/C ducts.

Warranty extension on O2 sensors – Paul,
C’mon, don’t blame the owner’s dead skin flakes for the terrible smell, mold and fungus in the AC system. Sounds gross man! Unless maybe Yellowrainbow uses ONLY recirculated air setting on the AC, then maybe your theory might be closer to the truth. Mold and fungus spores exists normally all around us, blown by the wind. All it needs is a moist, warm, low light environment to start growing on things.
    Yellow Rainbow,
Check that all your AC drains are not cloged and are draining properly. Any build up of moisture within the system will result in this mold and fungus smell problem. Also check that your ventilation air filter is not clogged up and needs replacing. As I think Paul mentioned, good high volume air movement through the system helps dry out any moisture present in it. This problem is actually very common on all brands of cars and sometimes comes down to how well the AC system was originally designed. Some manufacturers actually have proprietary chamicals that they can spary and treat the system internals, but this ususally is something you will have to repeat unless the root problem (like the possible clogged drains and filter) is fixed.

Warranty extension on O2 sensors – Most companies use this, including VW.

This is the text of an email sent to one of the NB.org members who wrote in asking about this problem:

Not to be rude, but that smell is you. The odor comes from bacteria that has made a home on the fins and tubes of the part of your AC system inside your car called the evaporator. Part of what makes the air conditioning feel so good is that moisture from your perspiration is condensed out of the air when the interior air passes through the evaporator unit under the dash.
Most of the time this condensation runs out of a drain and drips under the passenger side floorboard onto the road. If this condensed persperation does not drain completely then a biological life cycle begins and odors are inevitable. Try to switch recirculate lever to fresh as soon as the interior of your VW reaches a comfortable temperture level. This will keep a supply of outside air mixing with the cabin air and cut down on the odor buildup.

Warranty extension on O2 sensors – Yuck! I always use refreshed air!

VW service told me I need to replace the O2 sensors when they checked the reason for the Engine Light to be on. I just replaced my Catalytic Converter. ( I have lots of miles over warranty so they wouldn’t cover it. OUCH!)

    Thanks for replying.
