99 Jetta…no fan, day lights,

I got my 99 Jetta Wolfsburg in 2000 used. I have had a rear passanger window problem that I have yet to get fixed but my problem now is this…..I start my car, I let out the e-break and the break light on the dash goes out…but not all the way. It is just sort of dim. Then my day time running lights are off…my fan and my wipers don’t work. My blinkers are good to go. My headlights and dash lights don’t work. Am I looking at a sensor here? I checked the fuses and they seem okay. Here is the tricky part. I doesn’t do it every time. Sometimes it is okay..sometimes it is broken. This is very frustrating!! However, this is one of the few problems I have had with my Jetta and I love it.

99 Jetta…no fan, day lights, – Sounds exactly like how my Passat acted when its ignition switch went to hell.
Twigle the ignition key around and see if it makes a difference, but it might be too late and your switch might be too far gone. It’s so stupid why VW puts all those things together in one circuit and all goes Kaput if the ignition switch dies. At least with my B4, that seems to be how they designed the electrical system.

99 Jetta…no fan, day lights, – Thanks…I will try anything at this point! I am sure I will end up taking it in but like I said…I have had very few issues so I must be one of the lucky ones!!!

99 Jetta…no fan, day lights, – Dang it! still more ignition switch problems! I thought Volksyugo figured that one out after the 97 model year! Just be very careful driving your car at night. you wouldn’t want your car to go all dark on you in the worst time, like going 75 on a curve in a dark part of a highway. I tried to get my ignition switch fixed as a sfety recall from VW. They did finally recall the switch, by a directive from NHTSA, but being Volksyugo, OF COURSE THEY DID NOT INCLUDE MY 97 MODEL YEAR!!!! Even though it has the same exact part and breakage problem as the recalled 94 to 95! So I’m out 200+ bucks and my “new” switch is still acting up on me! Volksyugo of America is Evil! And No! it’s not the dealership! it Volksyugo!

99 Jetta…no fan, day lights, – For Chombi….You are correct, it is the ingnition. The problem happened again today, I wiggled the key and I was good to go. This means I have to replace it….right? More money down the crapper. Thanks so much for your help!!!

99 Jetta…no fan, day lights, – Ignition switch most likely – for sure if you wiggle it a little bit and everything goes to working. good luck!

    99 Jetta…no fan, day lights, – You’re welcome,
This is just another example of a crap parts design that VW so insists on using year after year after year. What are they waiting for? Someone to get injured or killed because of this defective part. They cannot deny that they don’t know about the problem, because they and Audi recalled a select few model years with this ignition switch design. But as Beck says, they didn’t cover all the models that use the same or similarly designed part. You can see where VW priorities really lie. No, not you the customer, but that green stuff in your wallet.

99 Jetta…no fan, day lights, – Try this. Purchase a pressurized can of cleaner / degreaser (WD40 / 556) at Auto Zone, Pep Boys, Parts Plus, NAPA, etc. (Make sure it has a 4 inch plastic nozzle extension) Push the thin plastic nozzle extension deep into the key opening and squirt some in the ignition switch. Pull the nozzle half way out and squirt some more. This will often clean the contacts and fix your switch.

I read this suggestion someplace in a VW thread and I can? remember where.

I recall the thread ended like this. ?f this doesn? work you are only out a few bucks?
You are probably looking at a few hundred dollars to replace the switch.

The real question is why doesn? VW step up and help its customers? Limited recalls for the same part makes no sense? They usually help “”only”" when there is litigation or safety involved!
