Leaking coolant

i have looked at alot of sites to try to determine what is going on with our jetta wagon TDI 2004.

the coolant container has been leaking coolant “”somewhere”", first we thought into the engine, got the car towed they said they could find no trace of coolant/water in the engine, keep driving come back for pressure test…..

the problem continues to get worse over the next two weeks….
the pressure test shows nothing….keep driving the car they say….

now the coolant has to be filled every 3 days…i’m not joking….i have an hour commute so we drive alot, hense “”let’s get a diseal!”"….

the dealership said that they wanted to call VW international to see if they know what to do, that was 5 days ago…last night the engine light came on, called to get it taken in, they cannot fit us in, keep driving, car died last night towed to dealership….

i’m really dissapointed in the “”drive in until it strands you”" mentality, i have a 2 yr old and i wanted a reliable car not this….

i cannot find anyone else who is having this problem, at this point i am looking up the lemon law since we just bought the car….does anyone have a clue?….i just had to vent this out….i am a really patient person but this is taxing me….

Leaking coolant – Sounds “block” or “head” related (burn-off) if there are no leaks on the ground. But here is another thought just to explore. Read and learn.

Who knows with these lemons? You may have to put a bucket under your rear tail lights!

Forget about the cost of the coolant, you’ll make that up afer you go to court! Don’t forget to add in the cost of the new wiring harness! ($1,200)

Leaking coolant – The last reported taillight migration was in some 2003MY. It’s possible sunshine’s got the same issue, but if the dealership didn’t check for that the first time then sunshine needs to find a new dealership.

Leaking coolant – See you missed the point again.

The TSB is dated April 30, 2001 and covers 1999 to 2001.

By your own admission it continued until at least 2003. (Who knows for sure how much longer?)

They were slow to admit and even slower to fix.

Leaking coolant – I missed what point, exactly? Oh, you mean your insistence that the only option is litigation?

Oh, I got that point. I just ignored it.

Hopefully, sunshine’s gone on to TDIClub where all that information is present, including the fluid migration problem, and avoids the aggravation.

Leaking coolant – he who quotes has no imagination

come up with your own sayings please.

sunshine if you want this problem solved try taking it to an ASE certified tech. not the dealer. it will probably not cost all that much to have them find out the problem then go back to the dealership and have them fix the problem. just a quicker way to get your problem solved rather than a year or 2 or 3 trying to sue vw. get it fixed then look at sueing. if the $60 dollars to have someone else find the problem is worth sueing over.

Leaking coolant – i have had a crach course in coolant migration in the last 2 hours….thank you for the all the info…i am checking out the TDIclub forum info this is all helping us make a better decision about what to do…..it is really suprising how fast it has been sucked out….the 20$ gallon coolant is almost out, filling it every 3 days, you’d think it was spraying out the back of the car….

Leaking coolant – What coolant (type, brand, where you buy it) have you been using to refill. Is this 2004 TDI a PD engine or the older TDI engine?

My advice is to go to the TDIClub forums and ask your question there. They’ll have the most knowledge on the subject and the forums are friendly.

Leaking coolant – i bought the very expensive coolant from the dealership (it says you have to, of course) and it is not a PD…i have checked this forum you mention but not posted yet….i will though..

Leaking coolant – G12 should cost $12-15 at the dealership for a gallon jug. How much are they charging you?

I would expect them to compensate you for extra coolant due to leaking since they made you “”keep driving”". Might want to suggest that to them.

Leaking coolant – There’s a recent case of coolant migration reported on a 2004 TDI! The dealers are replacing some of the wiring and the coolant bottle.

But if that amount of coolant was going down the wiring, then all sorts of electrical problems would be showing, first off, the instrument cluster!
