99 jetta wolfsberg – 1. What kind of transmission?
2. Is it actually broken or is your mechanic telling you something you didn’t know?

99 jetta wolfsberg – the noise sounds like when a kid puts a card in a bike wheel. i know that doesn’t sound like a big deal but thats what i heard the first time too. its starts like that then gets worse then won’t go into gear then the whole thing craps out. you are right i don’t know the mechanic but i thought i was overreacting when i heard it and brought to him without saying anyhting thinking it might be something small. but he told me there was nothing he could do, even after i told him i wasn’t going to replace it again no matter what. he told me to get rid of it and get a honda.

99 jetta wolfsberg – i hear the noise anytime i am in reverse unfortunately since i had it back i hear other things too now but thats a whole other story. what should i have done? i know, besides read a book about trans etc. should i have gone right back to VW instead of the mechanic? (the one i had it done at is in boston and i don’t live near there anymore.)how do i found out if its totally f***ed without paying anymore.

99 jetta wolfsberg – So right now the car can’t move at all…. if that’s the case, then yes, something died.
I assume the engine starts up and the car is currently in neutral.
What happens when you disengage the clutch (press down on the clutch pedal)? Is there any noise then or does it only make the noise when you try to shift (pop in a gear then engage the clutch)?
Have you popped the hood and tried to hear where the noise is coming from when you try to shift?

99 jetta wolfsberg – its a manual and the mechanic told me its totally unfixable. i don’t know if thats true but it did the same noise the last time, except now it accurs in reverse not second, and totally died. i don’t know but this this cost me $800 and i don’t want to spend anymore. i want to sell it as is beause i think if i fix it in 20,000 miles it will just brake again. i don’t know much about cars but 20, 000 miles doesn’t seem a lot. don’t know what to do

99 jetta wolfsberg – sorry i just read my last post and it seemed unclear. the first trans cost me $ 1000 and i did it at VW. when i heard the same noise i took it my friends favorite mechanic. it cost me $800 to take it apart check it out and put it back together. when i called VW about this they told me to take it to VW to have it checked it out. but i don’t want to pay for another diagnosis. i don’t know the right questions to ask the mechanic i went to but i feel they are reputable

99 jetta wolfsberg – Could you describe the noises? What do they sound like, when do they occur, etc.
I’m not at all convinced the transmission is kaput enough to have completely replaced, and it sounds like this mechanic is not someone you know well enough to trust.

99 jetta wolfsberg – i tried to hear from under the hood but i don’t hear it unless i am moving. i go into reaverse and as soon as i move i hear the noise in the middle of the car and feel a funny vibration in when i push down the clutch. the car drives. it just makes bad sounds that seem to get worse.

99 jetta wolfsberg – This happens only with the reverse gear, then?
Sounds like the gear is chipped and dying. Could also be the hub gear.
Your mechanic may be right, things may have to be rebuilt.

99 jetta wolfsberg – I’m sorry it wasn’t anything less serious. I would inquire on what sort of transmission was installed two years ago… was it as rebuilt part or brand new?
Such early failure may be due to the part that was installed, or through improper installation, back at 60,000 miles.

99 jetta wolfsberg – The masked man is Paul, who reminds me a bit of the great guy who married my beautiful but promiscuous no-good sister but who sticks by her anyway because he figures she’ll get her act together someday. Besides, she’s fun to drive.

99 jetta wolfsberg – I don’t know if it’s worth pursuing, but you might want to have the mechanic evaluate just what happened to the transmission, particularly the reverse gear, and see if it may be due to installation error or a badly rebuilt part.
In other words, see if there’s enough evidence for a lawsuit against the dealership that performed the work (or even VWoA) — this, of course, requires you to commit to such an action, as it will very likely cost time and until reimbursed, money.

99 jetta wolfsberg – VW tells me that reverse gear will go bad if the car is not at a complete stop before the vehicle changes direction (either from forward to reverse or reverse to forward). I am not trying to place blame on the driver, but rather give advice so to prevent the problem from reoccurring

99 jetta wolfsberg – It’s also good to know if liz never did that, and she can tell them she never did it before they tell her she did.
A pre-emption, if you will.

99 jetta wolfsberg – But if liz HAD done that would she really admit it???? I’m not putting a bad reflection on Liz, surely I do not know the lady but it’s not human nature to accept blame.

99 jetta wolfsberg – Now don’t make those bad assumptions about Liz, Thats they way they think at Volkswagen “”Customer Care”" Department. They usually try to blame most things on the owners to avoid any costs on their part.
Be careful Liz, a lot of owners have had that kind of treatment from Volkswagen of America. Don’t be surprised if you have to fight hard for any compensation or warranty work for your failed transmission.
