2002 Passat oil pump problems - Rick:

Color me wrong. Since there are others that are having rear-brake issues (and VW of Canada has apparently acknowledged the problem), I owe you an apology.

I guess I'm just fortunate. I have a great dealer that does all the service on both mine and my wife's VWs and we've been very satisfied. $30 for oil changes, warrantee repairs (minor stuff) done without question, free shuttle to work, good coffee and internet access in the waiting room.

I hear horror stories and it sounds like nothing I know.

So, I'll be on the look out for brake wear on my wife's Jetta.

2002 Passat oil pump problems - ok, lets calm down for a minute. needing pads and rotors at 27k? that is a wear item that depends on how you drive your car. the rings, im in agreement that its way too early for that. unless its being drivin like a "friggin race car".

2002 Passat oil pump problems - Rick:

Tell me how then you got surprised by needing new rotors at 27K?

That makes no sense to me.

If VW quality were so bad, the Passat wouldn't continually be ranked so high in it's category by all the major auto mags.

Who's ignorant here?

2002 Passat oil pump problems - While it would give you solace to believe that the problems I experienced were my own fault, the reasons lie in the fact that VW sucks. I drove my car normally, not like ""a friggin race car"".

You VW lovers are amazing. You are in complete denial. I don't give a rats ass if you have ""no patience for drivers who drive their cars into the ground."". I have no patience for car companys that charge me full price for a piece of crap like this jetta.

Why don't you own up to your ignorance in assuming that it must be the owners fault? It's the same theme we hear from all VW lovers.

2002 Passat oil pump problems - Rick:

One more thing.

If you needed a ring job at 18000 and brakes/rotors at 27000, one can only assume that you drive your Jetta as if it's a friggin race-car. Those two issues are relatively unique to you.

While VW is far from perfect, I have no patience for drivers who drive their cars into the ground.

The fact is that you should service your car according to the way you drive it. If you drive it hard, which is your right, then you should change the oil more frequently and use a brand/type of oil which is for hard driving.

As for the brakes/rotors, if you get your brakes inspected frequently, then you should know that your pads are wearing down well before the rotor begin to warp.

I have my brakes inspected every 5,000 miles. If the pads need to be replaced at 20K (for about $175) that's a lot cheaper than replacing the rotors or rebuilding the brakes at 27K.

Take responsibility for your actions my friend.

2002 Passat oil pump problems - It was explained to me recently by my VW Service Shop (Colonial Volkswagen in Westborough, Mass - AWESOME service) that there was a design flaw with the size of the oil pans in the 1999-2002 1.8T Passats. They were too small.
There was an owner's manual supplement sent out to all registered VW owners mandating the use of certain types of synthetic oils in the 1.8T Passats.

If you're having the ""oil sludge"" problem, then VW should pay for it. Call VWoA. It might take a handful of phonecalls to work it out, but you shouldn't have to pay for damage due to a design flaw.

Also, for anyone who buys a used VW, you should call your local VW dealer and find out how to register yourself as a VW owner. That way you won't be surprised by recalls.

2002 Passat oil pump problems - I've said this before but I expect to take care of wear items. I had no warning about the pads even though the car was in the shop a couple weeks prior. Next thing I know I ghet this grinding sound. I called the dealer and they couldn't have cared less. I'd have to look back but I think it was aboiut 2 weeks to the appointment. I went to Meineke. I called the dealer back to make the note on my maintenance record and their response was, ""only one rotor?""

This in addition to the windows falling into the door and the ring job and the lousy radio and the cupholders they lied again and again aboput fixing and an overall terrible customer service experience is why I believe VW sucks. Refute me point by point if you have that kind of time but my opinion will not change.

2002 Passat oil pump problems - I'm detecting a theme in Derek T's posts.

Europe also sports economy VWs moreso than VWoA, which never introduced the Lupo or the Polo, two excellent economy cars that would have been popular competition against Kia and Hyundai and Ford.

The different safety and emissions specs also introduce little niggling problems like bad sensors, etc.

2002 Passat oil pump problems - Seems like you all are having problems with your American-made VWs and VWOA. I live in Germany (past 14 years) and have owned a variety of VWs and had no problems with them nor with VAG. Maybe it is an VW-American thing. BTW, I am an American living in Europe and currently own a 2004 VW Passat Variant 2.0. and a VW Polo Coupe (actually a hatchback)
