oil consumption vw passat
Hi again. I talked to vw customer care. They told me that adding one quart of oil every 1000 miles to a 2003 passat glx wagon v-6 met industry standards. I’ve been doing this for about a year and 3/4. I have 24,000 miles on the car. They fixed a cam tensioner but it still loses oil. VW would not give me a copy of this “standard” as they said it was internal information. Help. I’m thinking of asking for a new car with a trade in on this one. It will be interesting to see what they say.

oil consumption vw passat – That’s bullpucky.
I’m not familiar with the V6 engine, but no engine should lose a quart every 1000 miles.
Request to have an oil consumption study performed. This is a months-long endeavor, but in the end it’ll show your oil consumption is above normal and they’ll fix it.

oil consumption vw passat – Hello, due to the way in which this vehicles engine is designed the average usage, NOT LOSS of oil is 1.5 qts every 3,500 to 5,000 miles. Your engine oil is only changed every 5,000 miles. if your service dept is telling you that it’s normal to use a qt of oil every 1,000 miles and not offering an oil consumption test…FIND A NEW SERVICE DEPT. Strongly request to start an oil consumption test and follow through with your NEW service dept. If at the end of the oil consumption test, there is cause for alarm, the VW representative in your area will be notified and action will be taken to solve the problem. Be advised, 1.5 qts per 5,000 miles. This oil is not used at any specific rate and also depends on your style of driving. During this consumption test you will be asked to check your oil every so many miles and report it to your service advisor.
You can find these specs on any website stating the manufactureres specifications and fuel and oil usage averages for this specific engine design. Again due to the design of these motors they do use a little oil. Loosing oil is when you can see it on your engine, underbody, garage floor or driveway. Fixing the cam tensioner will not stop oil usage/cam Seals will, but you will see them leak and it smells like burning oil. After the oil consumption test, you and your service dept may find you need your engines rings replaced. Good luck.
