2001 Jetta 1.8T
We have this jetta for about 6 months. When my BF picked it up, I noticed the idle was off, and it was not constant. Then the check engine light appeared and has never turned off. Also, the engine seems to lag under 3000 rpm. And apparently the engine has just shut off for no reason other than turning a corner, and or going up a hill. Thought it was the O2 sensor changed that, reset the computer, and the car chugged when it was in drive – and slowly started to kick in. Now the coolant light keeps comming on and the coolant levels are fine. Something is clogged and I am not sure what. Definately will not goto the VW dealership for service. To much $$$ and I can never get an appointment.
Any suggestions?

2001 Jetta 1.8T – Possibles:
Coolant temp sensor
MAF
The newer coolant temp sensor has a green plastic top (the old one is black), check to see if you have a cylindrical object on the driver’s side of the engine (remove the engine cover and look along the side of the engine) that has a green top. If you don’t, then that’s the first thing you should replace. The part is $5-7, and you can replace it yourself with little effort, avoiding the $70/hr. VW mechanic’s fee.

2001 Jetta 1.8T – Sounds like a MAF. When I first purchased my car I had almost the same exact problems and the MAF sensor was bad and I also had the turbo bypass valve replaced. Does your turbo have a load whistle sound when it spools up? And does it sound like it has a blow off valve when you shift? If you have these problems then definitely check your MAF and turbo bypass valve. You really cant check them… but you can replace them. The only other option you have is to take it to the dealer. I know you said you dont want to spend the money and dont have the time… but sometime you just have to suck it up and do what you got to do. Good luck and let Paul and I know what’s going on so we can try to further assist you!!
