2001 golf 1.8t –
Did someone steal your battery?
(Here is an old dirty trick that the youngsters here may not know about. It goes back to the older cars when there were outside hood releases and no alarms. But it still could apply to todays cars.)
A guy would come out from work or a bowling alley to find his battery missing. Stolen right out of his vehicle! So he gets a ride home and the next morning goes down and purchases a new battery and installs it himself.
Two weeks go by and the same thing happens. Same parking lot! He comes out and finds that his battery has been stolen again! Only then does he realize that he has been taken..the thieves didnt want the old battery.. they wanted his new replacement battery!
Never wrestle with a pig. You both get muddy and the pig likes it!

2001 golf 1.8t – Is the clock still working? That would rule out yup’s stolen battery theory, as well as give you a sanity check.
Check to make sure the wiring harnesses are all in place under the hood.
When you insert the key into the ignition switch, does your cluster light up? Is the ABS light on?
Your ignition switch may be damaged.

2001 golf 1.8t – LOL yup… it’s like if someone stole my Jetta (yay) just because they knew I’d replace it with something better (read: pretty much anything) which they would then steal.
To add insult to injury, they could leave the stolen Jetta in its place.

2001 golf 1.8t – It’s worth checking the condition of your ignition switch. VW had a bunch of these fail on their cars, but I believe they were mostly on slightly older models. Try blasting it with some contact cleaner or WD40 and see if helps. My second ignition switch started acting up and exhibited the same symptoms, but a few blasts of WD40 saved me from paying the stealership another 200+ dollars to replace it again.
Good luck!
