98 GTI electrical issues

Ever since my car stalled one day at a stop sign, my speedometer and odometer, doesn’t work, gas gauge flows up and down, radio stays on when car is turned off and the 4 way hazards come on when the right turn signal is used. I have since replaced the instrument cluster, all bulbs, 4-way flasher unit, turn signal switch on the column and the two O2 sensors which came up bad with a hand held analyzer. Now there’s more trouble codes than imaginable. Would the ECM control all of these functions including the instrument components and turn signals? This WAS the coolest car I ever owned (believe it or not) and has been sitting for the past six months.

Oil Sludge - the $110 solution

I wasn’t gonna start a new thread but…

I just had a $110 oil change because of the massive amounts of sludge on my oil cap and, presumably, in the rest of the block. Dude tells me that it’s because of condensation yada yada… did a flush and put synthetic in there so that I wouldn’t suffer the same fate as others here… I ASSUME I did the right thing to avoid the problems that you guys have encountered…

$110 more dollars because VW Sucks.

Volkswagen Golf GTI Commerical

Not only can’t they get their market segments determined and prioritized. They come up with this ad..a Gene Kelly dancing in the rain break dancing remix to promote the Golf GTI.

Everyone will like (maybe?) a third of the ad. How many folks will like all three? (Gene Kelly, break dancing, or Volkswagen) This is how they are spending their ad dollars!

If you paint with too broad of a brush…..you will miss the canvas.

Wonderful. Terrible.

Catalytic Converter problem—help please

I’ve had many many problems with my newer model ‘99 Jetta over the years. Yes, I got it in the first year of manufacturing the new model—stupid I now see. I actually bought it used, but that’s a whole ‘nother story.

At 40K miles I had to have the catalytic converter replaced (it rattled horribly), luckily under warranty. It’s now almost 4 years later and the rattle is back and the converter needs to be replaced again. I’m now at just over 80K miles (80,800 when I finally took it in) and just over the warranty. I’m told by the dealership to contact VW of America to see if they’ll extend the warranty or pay for the part. I am hesitant to do this without proper “”counseling”" because I don’t think they’ll have any sympathy and will care less about my problems.

So my question to you good people is what should I say to the VW of America people that might, just might, convince them to replace my catalytic converter free of charge??? Thanks in advance.

VW: The Wrong Focus (A Forbes article from 4/13/04 but still relevant)

I agree with everything this author has written, particularly the bit about not addressing the correct market and the unfortunate strength of the euro.

What is going on with my oxygen sensor!?

I just left my local VW dealership with the same news I’ve gotten over and over and over and over again. Faulty O2 sensor. I have a 2001 Jetta. I asked for a history report which indicates this happening over 10 times. Is there anything I can do? With a faulty O2 sensor I go through a tank of gas in 2 days, which is excellent because I have to drive on this faulty sensor for at least 2 weeks until the dealership has to work on my vehicle. This time I stormed out letting everyone know that my vehicle is a piece of JUNK. Any help would be great, thanks.

you have to wonder

after reading a lot of posts on this site, you begin to wonder actually how much of what you people are saying is true or not. I am sure some of you have complaints that are legit. but some you seem just to complain for the hell of it
