VW OIL Question – That depends on your location.

For climates like California, 10W30 is mostly all right, though during a hot spell you’re better off with a W40.

People who live in seasonal climates, where the temperature varies, either go with a synthetic with range (0W40), or switch out their oils twice a year, running a “cold-oriented” oil (0W30) in the winter and a “hot-oriented” oil (20W50) in the summer. Common weights that work are 5W30, 10W40, or 0W40. 10W30 is an older formula, and should run okay, but I would not recommend it in the long run.

The best bet is to purchase an oil whose label clearly states it is VW 505.00 standard approved.

Note: Amsoil 10W30 is actually a very good synthetic oil for a turbocharged engine; it’s just something you shouldn’t run when it’s really cold or really hot weather.

VW OIL Question – Do yourself a favor and use synthetic. 10/30 should be fine, but if you are in a colder climate would reccomend 5/30
