Passat Roof Leak

97 Passat Wagon – no sunroof. Large puddle behind driver every time it rains. I’m assuming no warranty. Any ideas how to fix?
Thanks.
Doug in New Mexico (it does rain in the desert)

the drain hose is going somewhere – You are going to want a more technichal response than mine BUT
there are drainage hoses in all cars that in most cars that allow water too escape.
Therefore I draw two conclusions. 1) is this a new event? If so then perhaps the drainge has become clogged???
If this has always happened then perhaps during build the hose was routed incorrectly OR it is not being used by the water at all.
As far as how to get to the hose and it’s proper locataion – I have no idea

    Passat leak – Hi Doug,
It rains here in London UK as well!

The puddle on the floor is a fairly well-known problem here. The cause and solution lies in the drains from the plenum chamber gatting blocked by leaves and crud. The area in front of the windscreen fills with water and eventually penetrates the seals in the firewall. The water runs down and collects in the footwells.

Open the bonnet, look at the battery, should be just in front of the windscreen, that whole area is the plenum chamber. Get someone qualified to remove the battery and its mountimg plate, then find the two big rubber outlets on the floor of the plenum chamber (one may be hidden under the brake servo) and clean them properly. Rinse the whole area using a watering can or similar to remove all the crud. you may want to spray some waxy sealer in the area to slow corrosion. Check all the firewall seals are good and replace as required. Dont forget to remove the interior carpets and fix up the floorpan. Check the plenum chamber every 6 months.

Look at http://www.honestjohn.co.uk for an amazing archive of this kinda stuff, its where I got it. I have no connection with this site.

Let me know if this fixed it.

    Regards,

    Cameron
