VW Jetta sealed transmission - FYI, for my 1997 Jetta GLX (62,000 miles), I tried to get VW dealer to just change transmission oil, check seals and they said they wouldn't do it! From past experience, if I let them look at it for them to tell me what THEY think I need, I'm sure they would have said a new transmission. Couldn't even get an appt. for 10 days! So, I called a local company who works only on foreign car transmissions. They had the special dealer oil, did it today in 1 1/2 hours for $199, car is humming again. Think outside the dealer box!!!

Sealed Transmission - you are pretty much SOL.....Mercedes tried this ""maintence free"" crap for like all of a year and found out that you NEED to change your fluid after the tranny breaks in because there will be crap in the fluid from the tranny breaking in, ie. metal shavings and such.....

you are going to have to replace it.....but after you replace it and drive it for awhile (approx 5k or so, forget what the Benz break in mileage was) take it to the dealer and insist that they change the fluid and filter...if they squak take it to another dealer that will.....that ""maintence free"" just doesn't cut it, it is fluid and it will break down over time and harm the transmission......there is too much faith in the fluids out there, first oil and then tranny fluid....they learned their lesson about 10k between oil changes, but given VW's super slow learning curve it may take them some time to figure out that ""hey you can't just not ever change tranny fluid""......BTW, it only took Benz ONE year to figure that lesson out, curious about how long the VtroubleU namesake will take in figuring it out.....i think they may need more than those 100 or so employee's, hired on to ensure a quality product, up in Michigan.
