a theory

is it possible that moron and the other VW symps posting here are plants seeking to rekindle interest in this site? i think so, even though it may just be paranoia brought on by the trauma of owning a ‘99 golf for 5 years.

i’ve noticed a substantial decrease in the number of VWs on the road- and virtually no new ones (wait- i did see 1 new jetta on the road with temporary plates- i almost staged an intervention right there). i guess this is validated by their declining sales numbers. maybe former VW owners like myself have all gotten smart and gone the honda/toyota/nissan route.

i would encourage moron to keep posting and defending VW- whether it’s sincere or not. either way, it’s great comic relief to those of us who will never own another VW.

this is good stuff. makes me happy. basically his turbo locked up and broke apart throwing the pieces against the insulation on the firewall and catching that on fire, and then it was all down hill from there. couldn't believe how easy it went up, and dude has a fire extingusiher too.

I want out!

Hi all,
I have one year left to go on a 4-year lease of a 2002 Jetta 1.8T. In short, i hate this car, I’m done with it and want out. What are my best options? If I return it to VW, they will auction it off and bill me for the difference between the lease payoff (about 13.5K) and the auction sales price (i.e., I get raped). My plan was to sell it privately, it should fetch about $11.5K (mileage is just over 30k and the car has many extras such as moonroof). However, when I receive the check from the buyer and in turn pay off the lease, I effectively take ownership of the title (before then transferring it to the new owner), which means the California DMV will hit me with sales tax on the $13.5K lease payoff — this means I’m paying another $1200 on top of the $2000 I expect to lose, which just about equals my remaining lease payments. Are there any alternatives, or am I going to be stuck with this thing? (One option would be to use it as a dealership trade-in, but I’m not loking to take this route)
Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks,
Rick

Expensive Alternator

(This is from my cheesy - geek blog, but i thought it might be ok to post it here.

Get this … my Jetta’s dead alternator will cost me $510 at the dealership for the part and $170 in labor to put in and they can’t get me in for almost TWO WEEKS!! This is unacceptable.

I found the replacement Bosch part online (a 120 Amp instead of the stock 90 Amp) for my car @ $160. With $30 for shipping and a $115 core charge, that’s not cheap, but the core charge is refundable and the $30 shipping gets it here overnight!

I have also found a mechanic within battery-driving-range that will drop in the alternator for me for about $75. Hrm …

Buy better parts online, service locally, 1-2 days. Net = $265.
Dealership stock part + service in 2 WEEKS: $680. (+ rental car fees, towing fees, etc - could be a lot more)

That’s just obscene.
Although, from what I hear, this is not JUST a VW problem, but there seems to be no advantage to using the dealership other than the fear of voiding one’s warranty.

Does anyone else get over-charged that bad?!

Bumper Stickers….

If anyone can direct me to a place for a bumper sticker advertising this site or the “”Driver’s screwed”" version, please let me know. I too am finally rid of my 2001 GTI and all of the problems it caused me. The check engine light was on when I traded it in for a new Honda. Fortunately, the dealer sold VWs as well, however, they commented on how their VW sales were WAY down. Let’s see, several computer parts related to the car breathing, a bad turn signal relay, several window clips, a window that literally left my car during a snowstorm and was last seen heading towards outerspace (I am not kidding), several headlamps, tail lamps, 4 batteries (I have the documentation), some switch that allows you to move the transmission from Park, a sunroof that started opening itself up without the key and doors that locked itself without a key and disappearing oil LATER, (and I am sure that I am forgetting something), I finally came to my senses and decided that it just wasn’t going to get any better. The VW Customer Service people are Useless. Try calling them sometime and if anyone from Volkswagen reads this, go ahead and pull up my records on your computers, if in fact they work. I wonder how many CSRs for VW own or ever will own one themselves? Anywho, I appreciate all of the advice I received on this site. It was the only good thing about owning that GTI and got me through the bad times! To those of you who help out and provide advice for the problems, Thank you, thank you thank you!

Everyone is entitled to their opinion so if you have anything bad to say to me like I am a moron or something similar–keep it to yourself. Until you’ve walked (and I mean that literally–plenty of times when my VW conked out) in my shoes, you can’t possibly understand where I am coming from. Go Honda!

$1000 expense on 2001 Passat

I took my Passat to the dealer. It was under 75k warranty. But still he has managed to work out an expense of 1000 for me which he says is not under warranty. Be careful. NEVER buy extended warranty. Each part you try to fix, they say its wear and tear. I wonder if VW ever publishes a list of products that need to be changed after every 45k miles. My vacuum cables were cracked. Thats wear and tear. My CV Boot tore, thats wear and tear. Everything thats broken its wear and tear. So basically each VW will go only 45k miles before EVERYTHING will start breaking..Hey its wear and tear !
This is definitely my LAST VW. I am planning to sell if off as soon as its out the shop.I dont understand why people keep buying this piece of CRAPP ! I’d like to add a few things that were BROKEN:
1. My gas lid wont close.
2. My rear passenger window wont work.
3. Engine light stays on.
4. Only driver door opens with remote. Others don’t…

I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IF SOMEONE COULD SUGGEST SOME GOOD CAR…Am dumping this peice of shit pretty soon.

This site says it all!

I stumbled upon this site, and had to add my current horror story.

I test drove a 2003 Golf back in January. I loved the feel of the ride, and the mileage was low. I spend a lot of my job in the car, so the gas mileage was appealing as well.

I bought it, and the chaos started.

A rotor had to be replaced right after I bought it. I had them replace the actual stick part of the shifter because the cheap silvery covering was bubbling and peeling. They had to replace the rubber hatch lining because it was just laying there, out of its seam.

When I picked it up from the shop with those repairs, I had a 4 hour drive for my weekend away. I noticed that the molding over the on the passenger side mirror was busted.

I came back, called the dealer, and stopped in around the first week of March so they could see it, and order the part.

The part has yet to arrive. Everytime I deal with the tech, I get one of three results:
1. “”It’s not in yet. I dunno where it is.”"
2. I leave a voicemail that goes unreturned.
3. “”It’s not in yet, let me look into this with our manager. I’ll call you right back.”" No call back, of course.

While I was waiting for the part to come in, the car just started going to pieces. I didn’t take it in when the first thing went wrong because I didn’t want to have to make another trip knowing that the part would be arriving and I’d have to take it in anyway.

My calls went unreturned, I couldn’t get anyone from the service department to help me. Finally, my fiance tracked down the VP of the entire chain of dealerships and freaked out. He apologized, arranged for a new Jetta as my loaner and told me to go to the dealer ASAP.

I went in, and the tech who hadn’t bothered to return any calls or help in anyway was looking stressed after getting chewed by his boss. He was suddenly the picture of customer service. He took down the things that are going on with the car, which took two sides of an invoice, and went something like this:

-part still missing
-urine-like smell coming through air vents
-right speaker doesn’t work
-treble knob on stereo comes off in your hand
-undercarriage is creaking
-rotor is warped yet again
-door is rattling (hatch or back passenger, can’t tell which)
-after running for 5 minutes or so, and having no issues, car will go into a normal downshift as I slow down and the entire car lurches

This car only has 34k miles on it. It had 29k when I bought it.

I have never EVER had issues like this with any car, let alone with them happening all at once. I was almost afraid to leave it at the dealer, because once I pick it up, something else will break.

I just bought in in January, so I’m assuming I’m upside down on the loan, but I am desperate to get rid of this piece of junk. I feel so duped and frustrated. I was glad to find this site and see that I’m not the only person who overpaid for a piece-of-junk car hiding behind good marketing campaigns.

04 GLI 1.8T Alternator removal???

I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the alternator pulley on the GLI. I bought a Neuspeed power pulley kit and the instructions inform you to remove with a 24mm socket… When i went to go remove the pulley, I popped the little plastic cover off only to find some strange type of “nut.” I have no idea what this thing is or how to remove it! But i would like to install my third pulley. Any ideas?
