The Bullshit begins 2001 passat engine oil sludge Problem – And did you happen to see what the dealer was looking at or take him at his word?

    1. The Passat 1.8T is prone to this (none of the transverse 1.8Ts have this problem except due to user negligence) — it IS a warranty issue.
    2. Was the oil changed at the recommended interval in your manual? Was it performed at that dealership? If not, do you have receipts?

Autoweek article concerning the problem and the extended warranty

This will be under warranty if you have proof you changed the oil at the recommended interval. If you did not keep the receipts or you did not change the oil when you were supposed to, then the dealership can deny the warranty claim.
