Passat Fixed

I’m going to take my 96 VR6 Passat to get fixed. I bought it 2 months ago. The guy who owned it before me was an idiot and didnt put power steering fluid it. Which, made the boot tear and now I gotta replace the whole boot. Possibly, a new rack. But even after replacing everything, I’ll still be under book value with price of purchase of car and repairs. => I got her cheap.

Passat Fixed – a boot won’t tear because it is low on fluid……boots tear due to wear/age……and you don’t need to replace the rack just for a torn boot. you can take off the tie rod end(knock it out of the spindle) and slip a new one on (that is after you remove the old one)…….

and watch the power steering fluid levels, they use a mineral base which tends to evaporate over time……wouldn’t believe how many people come in saying they’re leaking power steering fluid because they are low due to this….

Passat Fixed – I didn’t know CH11 evaporates that much. Hmmmm. maybe that’s why my Passat lost P.S. fluid without any leaks like you mentioned. My brother’s turbo A4 seems to be losing fluid too. He can’t find any leaks, so evaporation must be the reason. I gave him my big can of CH11 that I won’t need anymore, and he’s so happy for it. Could the high in-hood temps that a lot of VWs have be causing this evaporation too?
I’ll pass this on to him. I wonder if the reservoir can be relocated to a cooler area in his engine compartment.

Passat Fixed – I took it to pep boys, they said it was a torn boot. But, Pep Boys never knows what they are talking about. So I’m taking to VW Dealership.

Passat Fixed – yeah and the audi tech line is actually aware of this problem as well…..

it is pretty common, and i don’t really see how moving the bottle would help much under hood temps are going to be hot pretty much anywhere in there. however a better PS cooler could possibly help/solve it……personally just check it when you do your oil changes, and if the PS starts whining more than normal check it….
