Remote Key

Monday my remote key stopped working. I suppose the battery could be dead, but I was surfing with my keys in my pocket this weekend(attached to the internal keyring) so I’m guessing I fried something in the inside. I’m a little suprised it happened now, I’ve surfed with them in my pocket/wetsuit for the past year with no problems.

Q1. Can I open the set and try to replace the battery?

Q2. I’ve seen people selling the remote key on Ebay, is it difficult to buy the key on ebay and have it programmed to open my car? I’ve heard dealers charge in the ballpark of $170 or so for a new key…ouch.

KEYS – In case anyone else is interested, there are pictures on key battery removal here. Also some other helpful technical advice.

Remote Key – Swapped in a new battery and it works just fine. I didn’t even have to reprogram it.

Can you remember life before remote locks? How colonial.

Remote Key – The cost boils down to around $50 for the key/fob, $20 to cut it, and $100 to code it to your car.

If you had a VAG-Tool, you could do the coding, and purchase a blank off eBay or some other reseller. You’ll still probably go to the dealership to get it cut, but then your expenses would then be whatever it costs for the key and $20 to cut it… provided you find someone with a VAG-Tool who’ll code it for you.

I’d try replacing the battery first. That’s pretty easy:

    From post on Vortex:
    1) Stick screw driver into slot between transmitter section and body folding section.
    2) Pop/slide open
    3) Pry apart lower section of transmitter part
    4) Take out batteries (2) observe polarity.
    5) Replace with same batteries CR1620 or CR2032
    6) Reassemble

keys – VW just came out with a new system for programming their keys. Now the only
way to programmed a VW key is to use VW’s VAG scan tool, but that’s not it,
    you cna only programmed it through the internet. They use a system called GEKO;
what GEKO does is it gives you a 7 digit pin code through the internet and it
down loads it straight to the control module in the car, so your key will work.
You do need a user password and a login name to get into GEKO though. This system
was made to prevent theft. You only need to do this if you are cutting a new key.
To programmed only the remote part of the key you can use VW’s VAG scan tool.
You can also programmed the remotes on some of the VW’s if you have two or more
keys to the car. Put one key in the ignition and turn it to on position
(don’t start the car though), next put the other key into the driver side key hole
and turn it to the lock or unlock position and hold it there; while doing that
press and hold either the lock button or the unlock button on the remote. If you
do it right you will hear a beep sound.
