Vw Coolant

Hello

I have a VW Golf GT TDI (115 bhp)which is chipped by www.superchips.co.uk and the other day i pulled off my drive and a STOP sign appeared and it said check coolant. Sure enough the coolant had nearly all gone. So i went to VW and got some more of the pink stuff and put it in with some water. The questions i have are:
1: Why would the coolant go?
2: Is this a sign of a head gasket failure?
3. if so what other things should i be looking for to be sure it is that?

Also the temperature gauge fluctuates between 70 and 90 degrees. It never used to do this. Im really worried as i keep thinking that my car is going to come to a halt.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be happening to my car?

Thanks, nicola

Yea – You should try flushing the system out first. Make sure there isn’t an airlock. If thats the case your fine. Couple dollars for the bottle of coolant.

If that doesnt work, possible thermostat problem. Still, not to expensive to replace.

Another scenario, the water pump impeller could be broken. What year is your TDI and how many miles you have?

Vw Coolant – moron would be right if you were running hot, but it sounds like you are not. just sounds like you are losing coolant, thus causing your temp to fluctuate a bit. if your coolant drops low enough THEN you could have an air pocket in your system. but if no work was done on your coolant system i wouldn’t see an air pocket suddenly showing up.

possible bad coolant cap not holding pressure and it leaking out that way. i would look over your engine compartment and see if you see any coolant resdue (should be white looking) anywhere. you are leaking it, it is going somewhere. the diesels are pretty good in terms of headgaskets, so i wouldn’t think that would be the problem right off the bat. check for leaks and get back to us.

Vw Coolant – Coolant migration through wiring harnesses in a car must be the wierdest defect/breakdown out there.

Vw Coolant – if the coolant gauge is fluctuating during certain speeds, your water pump
might be going bad. vw is known for that especially when you have quite some
    miles on your vehicle.

lest we forget…… – she is still loosing the coolant, it is going somewhere. thus the car is leaking coolant out and that needs to be addressed as well.

i suggest running down the source of the leak first then address the fluctuating (sp)temp guage.

but true it could be the water pump’s plastic impellers gone bad, but if that was truely the case she would be overheating on the freeway

correct – If it the plastic impellers gone bad, I would suggest getting the brass ones when you replace it. It won’t break at, period. Good luck.
