I have the same issue - I own a 2001 Cabrio GLX. This issue was happening to me all summer on very hot and humid day. The way I cleared this issue, I put the gear in Park, then drive again. Now since it has been cooler it has not happening. I reported this issue to Sovereign VW in Hicksville NY, They claim, that they have never seen or heard of this issue. I have shown them print out of other people experening the same issue, they said they will look into it and get back to me. I will let you know.

sounds like - a shorted switch or maybe a relay is shorting something out, but it could be a lot of things, most of which should not be a major deal....the air curculation button is probably related to the fact that the ac is not operative. honestly there are others here who could give better analysis, and a few will just yell out how your car is a piece of garbage. be selective. if i were you i'd take it in to the dealer and have a diagnostic run, it should cost you about $90.
