Dead for no (good) reason.

As I am driving my 99′ Jetta today, I notice the tack compleatly drop and the car die. I put it in park, and try to restart it…with no luck, not only will it not restart, the key won’t turn back or release from the ignition ( they are still in there) the dash lights will come on and the car will ‘ding’ telling me to take my keys out, it just wont release them, or start. It’s sitting at the shop right now, with the import mechanic scratching his head in confusion. Any thoughts? Anyone ever had this happen?
thanks

Dead for no (good) reason. – When the exact same thing happened to my 97 Passat, it turned out that the ECU had completely fried itself. Unfortunately, it happened while I was driving at speed on the highway. They had to take the car back on a flatbed truck. They replaced the whole ECU unit under the 100K mile warranty. That’s good, but I really found it disturbing that the car totally quit on me and never went into some sort of limp mode to help me get the car safely off the road. I could have been killed because of it. Just lucky I wasn’t crossing a busy intersection or driving on a curvy mountain road. Everything shut down on the car, engine, lights, and of course, power steering and brake boost.
