I bought a 2002 jetta 1.8 T and had nothing but problems!!!
I bought a 2002 Jetta 1.8 T and had nothing but problems. I bought my car used.. because I live paycheck to paycheck. but when I got the car I was so happy to get out of my 92 olds achieva which was dieing slowly at 201,000 miles or so. The first day I got the damn thing. I was just getting home and I had to turn the headlights on and blame. Alternater was bad, along with about 50 thing that I found out in about 4 months of owning the car. I live in Ohio and the 05-06 winter here was pretty mild altoghter except a nice lake effect snow in early to mid December. That’s when I notice the damn rear window wasn’t defrosting all the rear window. Come to find out I have 5 lines that
are bad on the lower end of the window and now I stuck fighting VW to get the whole rear window replace. Along with that, the damn service manager at my dealership trys to act like I’m a 2 year old. I have one thing to say. I’ll never buy a VW again, and I don’t recommend anyone to buy one either. Their service sucks and the people there always talk down to you… I have one thing to say buy a mazda … zoom zoom!!!

I bought a 2002 jetta 1.8 T and had nothing but problems!!! – At least your Olds lasted over 200K My 97 Passat barely made it over 100K and pretty much gave me the ABS and CEL light finger that couldn’t be extinguished for any length of time no matter which VW service department I took it to. Couldn’t pass California Certification last year with all the warning lights flashing on the dash so I dumped the piece of troublesome junk and got me something much better. An 05 Scion tC coupe!
Late model VW’s typical usable, but not trouble free, life on the road = 90 to 100K. You can probably keep it running but it’s gonna cost you more $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and a lot of time and hassle ferrying it back and forth to the dealerships to be temporarily “”fixed”".
Chombi
zoom zoom zoomin too, but with my new Scion tC! 10K miles and ZERO, NADA, NO problems!

A Toyota, perhaps, for you. – I don’t think ANY European car is a good choice for anyone who’s living paycheck to paycheck or can’t skip work now and then for unscheduled service appointments. Those good folks are for whom Toyotas are built. Japanese cars are Zzzzz inducing appliances, but they (pretty much) perform as reliably as that GE Profile fridge in your kitchen. A European car, while exciting and stimulating to drive, is like that flaky chick or dude you can’t stop boffing who bleeds your wallet, sometimes disappoints you and lets you down with some regularity. But DAMN. It’s SO GOOD and SO RIGHT when it’s working that you bite your lip and keep going back for more, even though you know he/she will just hurt you again. Cause you don’t want to settle for life with an appliance. And all the while you bitch to your friends about how he/she f’s you over. “Dump the POS!”, your friends say. To which you can only reply, “But I love her / him. No one else makes me feel so…alive.” Then you take the VW out for a hand-wax on Sunday morning and spend the day together. And life’s very, very good.

I bought a 2002 jetta 1.8 T and had nothing but problems!!! – ALL manufacturers have “dull” “cooking grade cars” My 97 VR6 passat never excited me that much on the road with loads of lean and tons of weight on the curves. and a definite lack of torque at lower rev ranges that makes it feel like a lead boat. I just hate how the die hard VW fans generalize Japanese cars as all boring (appliances). Ever drove a G35? or an S2000, or a Lexus IS or a Z car???

I bought a 2002 jetta 1.8 T and had nothing but problems!!! – No, I haven’t driven those cars (interesting hobby you have, though). The author of the post says he’s a paycheck to paycheck guy, so he’s probably not going to be able to dash out and buy a new Z. Ever drive a Camry? That’s what you get for the price of a VW. (BTW, did you test drive the Passat before you bought it? Don’t tell me it gained weight when the warranty expired.) And finally, Chombi, I’m not a VW fan. I’d certainly not buy another one. But I do remember why I bought one.

I bought a 2002 jetta 1.8 T and had nothing but problems!!! – In all honesty, if the issue is driving fun, then for the price of a VW you’re better off with a MINI or, if you really want the best bang for buck, a Dodge Neon SRT4.
Motorrad’s correct that asking some with a VW if they ever test drove a $30k+ car is not a fair comparison (the only $30k+ vehicles they have are the Touareg, the Phaeton, and the upcoming Eos 2.0L FSI roadster).
