Temperature Light

I have a 97 Jetta VR6 and my temperature light started coming on this winter. If I shut my car off it would usually not come back on, but not always. I took my car in and they said that my water pump was leaking and this was causing the light to come on. After paying over $400 I was driving away and the light came back on. I am really irritated because they seem miffed as to why this didn’t fix it. I have an appt next week to take it back in but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of cheap quick fix ideas that I could try. Maybe the light has come on for other people and was easy to fix? I would appreciate any help.

I am having same issue right now .. BECAREFULL!!!!!!!!!1 – I have a 1998 Jetta Wolfsburg edition (WHOOOFRIGGENHOOO) aside from all of the power windows not working at all .. I started seeing the coolant light on and i noticed the water pump leaking. so I bought it for $31.99 not bad right .. well this friggen POS is like trying to do chinesse alegbra . i work on calls all the time and this water pump took me almost 14 hours. then I was told the timing belt HAS TO BE REPLACED every time you change the water pump because it is stretched out .. so i left to go get the timing belt and on the first test drive with the new water pump the car got super hot and it was blowing ice cold air. I realized the thermostat was stuck shut and the coolant light came back on .. i looked … cant see any of the 1 & 1/2 gallons of antifreeze that I added .. so the next day .. $345 dollars later i have a new timing belt on and thermostat installed from Firestone .. and it has lost all power . it has no balls anymore , and it is bucking and jerking like it is out of gas everytime i hit the gas .. so the timing may be off but the VW dealer says it is MANDITORY to replace the timing belt tensioner and now today the altenator went out ..and guess what .. a used rebuilt one is $198.00 ..

Oh sorry .. about your issue … – well you first need to make sure all the antifreeze levels are correct .. normally .. the little ball thing on the far right side of the engine bay should have two lines on it .. one represents low , one represents high .. when the engine is cold if should be at low and when it is hot it should be at high or “”full”" also is the car blowing hot air or cold, and what does your temp. gauge read.. is it straight up and down or is it past 1/2 way. etc . because if it is then the thermostat may be stuck (lucky you) about $75-100 to have it replace. or there may be air trapped in the lines .which is free to fix .. I hope some of this helps.

Temperature Light – Do this,First make sure the coolant is cycling properly and both radiator fans are operating.Coolant level is full.Disconnect the 2 wire connector on the coolant reservoir and jump the 2 wire terminals together.Restart the car and see if the light comes back on if not,i suspect the sensor in the reservoir is your problem. Also looking at the engine with the hood open you will see a master wire connector next to the cylinder head. You can unscrew this by turning the middle of the connector towards you (MAKE SURE THE IGNITION IS OFF FIRST) check for corrosion in the inside of this connector common problem for the vr6 all your engine sensors a wiring for the engine go through this connector.
