Melting Aux. Fuse box (initially AC Problem)
I’m guessing this one may cost me. (2002 GTI GLX VR6 w/autoclimate control)
Not that I NEEDED it yesterday, but my AC wouldnt work on my way home yesterday (just warm air). Who knows how long it has been broken, but I’m now over 60,000 miles.
Anyone else have any horror stories (or positive stories) about VW AC?
Most of the cars I’ve owned didn’t have functioning AC. On all of the ’80s toyotas I used to own they all would have cost about the value of the car to replace. It’s way too hot in DC to go without DC with a black leather interior.
I made an appointment to get it checked out, but any chance it is a simple re-charge? I’ll check a few independents to see what they charge so I can better gauge the price the dealer may quote.

Horror, oh yes. – The AC failed on my GTI (also with black leather interior) as well. In the desert Southwest. On a road trip. In August. I swear I could hear the VW “”advocate”" filing her nails while she yawned and denied my request for authorization to use an independent shop for a warranty repair, since the closest dealer, Premier Motors in Santa Fe, would only make a routine appointment a week later. But I digress. When I took the vehicle to my local dealer (after canceling the rest of my trip) it took 2 attempts and more than a week to do the job. Ultimately, they blamed the problem on a bad connection, but I don’t necessarily think they were being straight with me. It was, after all, a covered warranty repair.

AC Broken? – Simple recharge it may very well be, but if it’s the compressor or condenser then it’ll get pricy because of the part.

AC Broken? – Help.
The dealer just called, apparently the AC is now working after the techs shuffled some fuses around. Now the real problem seems to be that I have an auxillary Fuse box that seems to be “”melting”"
Bottom line is they are quoting $650. for a new “”aux. fuse box”" and some other stuff. They’ll be calling me back with more details.
“”edit”"
I’m struggling to remember the details, but the svc advisor says that the tech says 1 or 2 things is causing the aux.(I hate not actually being able to talk to the tech) fuse box to short out. (the fuse box somewhere under the hood…I looked but couldn’t find it). The cooling fan is constantly on, which I think they said was a bad control module or relay which could be causing the short. They also said it could be due to the actual fuse box being bad. They want to replace both.
Sadly, they replaced my cooling fan and the 2nd fan motor a little over a year ago…maybe I’m being ignorant, but I can’t believe that they two issues are not related?
Still waiting for a phone call confiming what I already suspect (not on warranty) 60K miles on a Certified Pre-Owned.

Melting Aux. Fuse box (initially AC Problem) – Phew, just got the word they’re going to repair it under warrany. I had initially figured it was a simple AC issue and was about to take the car to Jiffy Lube. I guess there’s a benefit to having all service work done at one dealership, hopefully that’ll continue to help my chances with warranty issues.
On a side note, if you’re on a first-name basis with the service staff at your dealership it may be time to get a different vehicle.
I still suspect that there are Gremlins under my hood, but for now, I’m relieved.
