I have a 2001 Jetta 1.8T Wolfsburg manual and Im about to blow this car up. I had many many problems over the years. I bought it used in June of ‘03. Aside from the many recall problems, I have replaced a Cat, brakes went bad without warning, leaking sun roof, seat problmes, center console, etc, etc, etc……..
Well now this gets better. I took the car to VW for its 80,000 mile service.Plus the turbo bypass was cracked and had to be replaced. I get it back, and the car is severly misfiring. I take it right back, they checked it and told me they installed the wrong spark plugs (used 2.0 plugs), so they put the new plugs and and away I drive. Car is still severly misfiring. Service tech then drives the car aroun for awhile with his computer hooked up. I hop in, and the misfire seems to have disappeared. Said the computer just needed to reset itself. I drive it to my wifes work, car is running fine. She then drives it home later and the CEL comes on, but car seems okay. I call VW and they are going to look at it on Mon, because I also had to schedule a clutch/transmission tear down because every time her or I shift the car, the transmission seems to ‘clank’.
Well the car also needed a new battery, whcih I knew and even the service tech told me. Well since the car isnt under warranty anymore, I figured I’d change the battery myself. Went to Sears, got a new battery, installed it after some cursing and took it out for a drive. The car is misfiring again, like when I picked it up from the dealer. I disconnected the battery and reconnected it hoping the computer would reset. Nothing. It has complete lag from 2500 to 4000 RPM’s. Its’the same condition as when I picked it up from the dealer.
What gives? Did something reset wrong with the new battery? The CEL is off though. Does the car need to be driven around more for the computer to reset? Any help is appreciated.
On a side note, I will never ever buy another VW again! I have had nothing but problems with this car since I bought it. its my wifes car, she only commutes 12 miles a day to work, and it gets driven around the SF bay area.
Conversly, I have a 97 Mitsubishi Eclipse that I have had NO problems with.
Sadly, when we bought the VW, my wife sold her 98 Honda Accord. Nothing was wrong with it, but it looked like a granny car, in her words. Now we are looking at buying another Honda and selliung the VW.
Any help is appreciated!
