Glad I found this site, my 2001 Jetta 1.8T is killing me! Multiple probs and read on for more…..help?

I have a 2001 Jetta 1.8T Wolfsburg manual and Im about to blow this car up. I had many many problems over the years. I bought it used in June of ‘03. Aside from the many recall problems, I have replaced a Cat, brakes went bad without warning, leaking sun roof, seat problmes, center console, etc, etc, etc……..

Well now this gets better. I took the car to VW for its 80,000 mile service.Plus the turbo bypass was cracked and had to be replaced. I get it back, and the car is severly misfiring. I take it right back, they checked it and told me they installed the wrong spark plugs (used 2.0 plugs), so they put the new plugs and and away I drive. Car is still severly misfiring. Service tech then drives the car aroun for awhile with his computer hooked up. I hop in, and the misfire seems to have disappeared. Said the computer just needed to reset itself. I drive it to my wifes work, car is running fine. She then drives it home later and the CEL comes on, but car seems okay. I call VW and they are going to look at it on Mon, because I also had to schedule a clutch/transmission tear down because every time her or I shift the car, the transmission seems to ‘clank’.
Well the car also needed a new battery, whcih I knew and even the service tech told me. Well since the car isnt under warranty anymore, I figured I’d change the battery myself. Went to Sears, got a new battery, installed it after some cursing and took it out for a drive. The car is misfiring again, like when I picked it up from the dealer. I disconnected the battery and reconnected it hoping the computer would reset. Nothing. It has complete lag from 2500 to 4000 RPM’s. Its’the same condition as when I picked it up from the dealer.
What gives? Did something reset wrong with the new battery? The CEL is off though. Does the car need to be driven around more for the computer to reset? Any help is appreciated.
On a side note, I will never ever buy another VW again! I have had nothing but problems with this car since I bought it. its my wifes car, she only commutes 12 miles a day to work, and it gets driven around the SF bay area.
Conversly, I have a 97 Mitsubishi Eclipse that I have had NO problems with.
Sadly, when we bought the VW, my wife sold her 98 Honda Accord. Nothing was wrong with it, but it looked like a granny car, in her words. Now we are looking at buying another Honda and selliung the VW.
Any help is appreciated!

Glad I found this site, my 2001 Jetta 1.8T is killing me! Multiple probs and read on for more…..help? – All I have to say is good luck. My 2001 Jetta 1.8T is now officially a hunk of JUNK. Anybody have $10,000 they can loan me for repairs? LOL When it rains, it pours. According to VW, I need a new engine AND transmission. On top of that, while my car was at the VW shop, it got broken into this past weekend and my car stereo system was stolen. GREAT!!!(sarcasm)
Like I said, “”when it rains, it pours”".

Glad I found this site, my 2001 Jetta 1.8T is killing me! Multiple probs and read on for more…..help? – There were two problems here with misfiring on this engine, the coil packs had to be updated and if the coil packs were overheating and misfiring then they could overheat the wiring harness to the coil packs causing the insulation to crack on the wiring. Also, there were problems with the secondary air kombi valves causing misfiring problems when starting up.

Glad I found this site, my 2001 Jetta 1.8T is killing me! Multiple probs and read on for more…..help? – my sympathies. i’ve been having problems with my POS wolfsburg, too.

bought the car may ‘04. started having problems with CEL in october ‘04.

got the runaround from the dealer, lots of screaming after doing an unauthorized $600 worth of work. knocked it down to 200.

just ignored it for quite some time until CEL came back on again. and again. and again.

in march of this year, CEL was on, car started bucking, lost power, CEL flashing. have it towed to dealer. “”nothing was wrong”" the next day. THANK GOD they didn’t charge me.

month later, need to pass emissions and CEL is on – take it to the dealer – $530.00 later, i miraculously pass emissions. replaced pcv, cleaned the turbo, cleaned the throttle body. light is off when i leave the dealer.

10 miles later - light is back on again. they refuse to plug me back in without the $95 charge. used my boyfriend’s OBD, 5 of the 7 codes registering were the same as when CEL was on at time being taken to dealer. decide to just ignore the CEL.

fast forward to this past sunday – car loses power at 75mph in the left lane of a 4-lane section of the GSP. have it towed to the nearest dealer, it’s the MAF.

i was told it would be under warranty – mechanic says it’s 8 years/80 . . . turns out it’s 7/70 . . . i’ve got 75K on my car. just got a call that it’s ready for pickup, they are only charging me 175 – discounted part & no labor cost.

can’t wait until 2 minutes from now when i’m taking it back to the dealer for more work. if it even makes it out of the parking lot.

Ditch the dealer. – Your car’s not under warranty, so why are you dealing with the dealer? Especially in the SF Bay Area! The minute my warranty expired I found an independent shop to take care of my GTI. I’m in the SF Bay Area, too, and I started taking my car to Moss Motors in SF on Valencia. I’m convinced they do better work and that they “know” my car. I highly recommend visiting the Car Talk website ( http://www.cartalk.com ) and researching mechanics there. Good luck!
