Asleep @ the Wheel – Recently I’ve rented a Toyota Camry, a Matrix (Pontiac Vibe), a Nissan Altima and a Chevrolet Malubu Maxx. After each return I’ve had an such appreciation for my troublesome VW. Sure, Toyotas are reliable. And bland and a completely forgettable experience. Like the other appliances in my kitchen. The Altima had me nodding off within a few miles. Camry? Just kill me instead. The best of the lot was the Malibu, and it was merely serviceable.
If you’re driving a VW, it’s probably because you “”get”" that European cars feel different. They provide the experience of DRIVING. If you bought one because the ads are cute, you’re probably stupid and you should buy an Accord.
All the European marques are rated below average. But they’re a joy to drive.

Some things never change….. – here is an interesting fact. jd powers for the 1st time also calcuated what people THOUGHT were design issues. in example bmw dropped heavily based on what customers thought of there i drive concept. with the inclusion of this, the survey really no longer has an accurate bearing on reliabilty

Reliability equals Dependability (?) – Same thing……VW at the stinking bottom!

Some things never change….. – Bear in mind that the JD Powers ranking is for quality, which is a perceived statistic anyway. So asking what customers thought of the I-Drive is perfectly valid for this sort of ranking.
In other words, this ranking isn’t going to tell you about reliability.
As for long-term dependability, that’s still working on MkIV data. We have to wait a couple more years to see how the MkV works out.

Some things never change….. – That means, by the way, Motorrad, that not all European marques rated below average.

Some things never change….. – Yep. Just heard from VW dealership where I dropped off 2005 Passat (20k miles)w/ “STOP Oil Pressure” light on. It’ll be $3,200. for a new pump. No receipts – no synthetic oil – No warranty coverage. Just like the hundreds of other post on this site.
