This did not make sense to me as the economy of scale of using common platforms is well known. But it makes more sense if Piech's ultimate goal is to ultimately have Porsche take over VAG. Porsche is a ""boutique"" car manufacturer. They are producing the high margin cars. I suspect that Piech's ultimate goal is to combine Porsche with Audi and the other high end labels under VAG. The Volkswagen group would be sold off. This is probably why Piech is allying himself with labor for the time being. It suits his purposes for the time being. Very Machiavellian. VAG will be retrenching to Germany. As jobs are reduced outside of Germany, Europeans will lose their "loyalty" to the VW brand name. The Japanese brands will make further inroads into Europe and VW sales will start to erode. With labor being such a force on the VW board, needed streamlining of VAG will be slow in coming. VAG is becoming less and less competitive in the world market.
