NO MOre vw’s
This is my third VW. I had a 2001 turbo Beetle that ran well until one day the head gasket blew, out of warranty of course. $1800 later it ran well for another 30,000 before I sold it (cheap). So I decided to try another vw this time after reading so much about TDI’s I bought a fantastic condition 04 Jetta with VW sponsored extended warranty. I had it for about 5 months and it got great gas mileage and I was happy with my purchase. Then one morning I tried to merge into traffic and it would not shift (auto0 out of third gear. I had to let off the gas and then it would kick into gear hard. I took it into the shop they said the brake lite was out and it was throwing off the electronics transmission. I said “”what’ but they assurred me it was fixed. I drove it home and sure enouigh the brake lite was fixed but the same problem with the shifting. The gas mileage had dropped off drastically as well. I called the dealership reported the problem was not fixed and they were amazed that replacing the brake lite bulb did not fox it. I dropped the car off and wanted the tech to drive it. “”Oh he drove it and is aware of the problem”". They call me the very next day to inform me that the 2 year old car with 47,000 miles is going to need a new transmission. I said I assume this is under the warranty, yes sir it will be about a week to get the part here. They give me an 07 Passat to drive for my inconveneince. The dealership is 45 miles away. The “”07″” passat is a nice ride except the sunroof does not work, the plastic housing comes off the gear shift when I shift and the lite keeps coming on stating 3 tires are low in air pressure. I tell the salesmen and she says oh all that is covered under the warranty, I’m thinking thats not the point this car has 23 miles on it. Anyway the transmission is installed I drive it home and the same damn thing is still happening. I call the dealership back again and the VW tech is out sick for three days I finally get it back in and they tell me after having the car for 2 days that it needs a new fuel filter. So this time I have the dealer bring me my car hoping that this time one of their employees will experience the problem since they refuse to have a tech test drive it in my presence. The car makes it to me and everything seems fine. The next day I am running errands and all of a sudden there is this weird sound like air escaping and the car reuses to excellerate and smoke starts pouring out of the back. I call the dealership their sick tech is out again and someone will call me back on Monday. I think I have purchased a lemon does anyone know how to contact VWOA and do I have a lemon law opportunity. I want to run away as fast as I can from this car and VW unfortunately. Please forward any contact info anybody has.
Thanks

- Your TDI’s initial issue with shifting was due to the brake light switch, not your brake light. Pretty sure the tech meant the brake light switch. Also pretty sure that this switch, having been redesigned several times, was probably not installed properly (the newest version installs differently from all prior versions), causing you further problems similar to a previous post.
It needing a new transmission sounds dubious, that it needs a new fuel filter even more dubious.
Frankly, I think your TDI was probably fine and all it needed was a properly installed brake light switch, and all the problems afterward are related to it being at that dealership’s service center.

- By this I mean your car might still be salvageable — just find another dealership OR a local mechanic familiar with late model VWs.

Safety Recall N4 – Brake Light Switch – I just got a notice in mail for 1998-2002 Beetles with Cruise Control, and 1999-2002 Jetta with Cruise Control :
Recall is to replace Brake Switch, if you have already paid seems to be a place to submit receipts to get reimbursed.

Wonderful……..brake – My 2000 Jetta came with a cheap plastic switch. Several years later, I got a recall notice. I took the car down and the tech installed the same cheap piece of plastic.
Several years later, I get another recall notice informing me that the tech may have broken the replacement upon installation. So now they beef up the switch, (new version), so the tech doesn’t bust it up during installation.
What about the other 50 or so cheap pieces of plastic on my vehicle that have broken? (See my profile)
Lousy car company.

Tranny problem! – I own an 06 Jetta TDI. I live 4 hours away from my dealer, I have 14500 miles on my car and the transmission is out. So I am totally without a vehicle and roadside assistance is a total joke. There is an intermational backorder on the parts and they have no ETA for them either. They will cover $30 a day rental fee and that’s it, well that is not enouh to rent even a Ford Focus. So Enterprise rental car is giving me a $69 a day rental for the $30 (rent enterprise when your VW breaks down). This is the second time this car has had to be towed and customer service is rude and all roadside assistance does is call a wrecker, I can do that myself. I feel that they misrepresent themselves and do not care about their current customers or their future ones either. So my point is the transmission was probably always going out and the brake thing was coincidental.
