Love-Hate

I purchased my used ‘98 2.0 GTI in march of ‘06. I love the looks of the mk3 and needed the excellent gas millage of the I-4 motor. Since then it’s been an up and down ride of highs and lows. Simple things started to go wrong, but were easily fixable. Glove box latch broke, sun-roof regulator blew, ball-cup flange on the shifter snapped effectively making my car only able to use gears 1, 3, and 5, and the best, my license plate lights blowing out which landed me a nice fine by the local police. The worst thing that has happened was my ignition system going bad after hitting a small puddle, volkswagens and water do not mix. I will have to take my hat off to the 2.0 engine. I drove it with mis-firing and horrible stalling and bucking quite a few times in the rain and it kept on trucking like a champ. After I installed a new distributor, plugs, ignition, and wires it ran like a brand new car. The same can be said for my wife’s 1.8L mk2 cabby which is still chugging along at 280k miles and an oil leak. My car may break often, but after driving other bland feeling-less cars (i.e. Sunfire GT, Civic, Cavalier, Ranger, and Ultima) I find myself gently hugging my volks’ steering wheel and thanking volkswagen of mexico for assembling me such a half-assed-fine piece of german engineering. :)
