VWoA 2009 Sales

VWoA ( media.vw.com ) reports US sales for 2009 were 213,454 vehicles. 2008 sales were 223,128.
This is a net loss in sales for VWoA.
213,454 vehicles sold in the US market makes VW A niche seller.
If not for the ” Cash For Clunkers ” program this number would be substantially lower.
VW has had to have taken a substantial loss (again) in the US market.
VW has advertised heavily and has offered substantial discounts on their vehicles.
They are trying to push their sales to 500,000. This is not going well.
VW’s past history of selling poor quality cars and not standing behind their products is coming back to haunt them.

Of course, the same sales report ( http://media.vw.com/index.php?s=43&item=546 ) shows that the last six months have been higher than the prior year’s last six months. Whether or not this is due to the government program remains to be seen for this year.

Also, it might be worth considering that the U.S. auto population dropped 2% in 2009 and for all carmakers is on a downward trend.

Conversely, China is booming and in fact, for VW, China is its biggest market: http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2010/jan/08/china-us-car-sales-overtakes.

Perhaps VW will abandon the US market ( like they have abandoned standing behind their product ) and concentrate on the Chinese market. Then ( if internet freedom succeeds in China ) someone can open a Chinese VW Sucks site in China.

“VW has had to have taken a substantial loss (again) in the US market.”

Not only has VW GAINED market share in the USA (up to 2% from 1.9%), they’ve also improved from 160 problems per 100 vehicles to only 112, and getting better. Toyota has 102 PP100, Acura is tied with VW at 112. VW is not the manufacturer you fell in hate with back in 2003. The cars are much better.

To all those so called ‘victims’: in over 30 years of fixing and tuning cars on both sides of the pond I have only seen a so called LEMON a car that has been made to be one by it’s owner him/herself. Once you people get rid of the ‘do-it-yourself’ fever that caught on to you and DO service your vehicles the RIGHT way, you’ll all see the light at the end of the tunnel and be sure, it won’t be the headlights of the engine! All too many nowadays use synthetic oil for the worst POS of a car just because the oil companies managed to feed into their brains ‘longer service intervals’ and here it comes the saving, while not thinking to use it where it counts and when it counts. The word ’service’ has no real meaning but while under warranty after which, very few even think about it. I’ve seen so many turning down a once every year brake service or filters changing for the sake of a few more bucks in their pockets. If you procrastinate and try to save, don’t be charging the product/brand at any cost. That’s hypocrisy and that makes you to join the bandwagon of lawsuits. If not - buy Toyota or rather the Runaway Toyota or The Killer Toyota, you pick one name, the car whose CEO does not even acknowledge their wrongdoing and has not even had the common sense to inform dealers of their findings. Or the US leader’s GM products which, boy they suck and suck them people off their money. Where were you when GM got some of your money from the powers to be? Give it a rest and get back at your clunker you believe actually ’saved’ VW from a bigger fall. The clunker that probably got you in a VW. And get better informed otherwise you’ll turn to be the laughing stock of the forums you post on.
